Because crit chance + 60% rending on crit let's him quickly snipe EVERYTHING and switch back to melee.
If you know how to use it....
Revolver, Columnus IA, Agripinaa BAG, Bolt Pistol, Laspistol, shotguns are all good for different uses. Overall I usually go with a Kantrael shotgun with Man-Stopper & Scattershot to cleave through mixed hordes like air, but nothing takes care of armor like Revolvers for example.
new guns are situative trash.
Revolver is veeeery situative weapon, you only can afford that when playing premades when you really need to shoot couple of times during whole run.
In pubs revolver is reason to lose, whoever have it in setup.
The revolver is an excellent choice for quickscoping and picking off carapace threats, but the reload can bite ya if the fight goes on for too long. But once you get the timing for reloading down, it's always a solid choice.
It's not massively overpowered or anything, but it fits nicely into just about any build and will serve you well. It also feels great to keep landing those headshots (fully recommend an "immune to ranged damage on weakspot hit" build with an executioners stance veteran too).
If you want meta, go revolver or Columbus infantry. Also laspistols with infernus are incredible on zealot.
If you want pure fun while still being effective: bolt pistol, double barrel shotgun, any shot gun with the manstopper and scattershot blessing. Those two will turn your shotgun into a plasma gun on crit.
Edit: turns it into a plasma gun in the sense that it cleaves not its dmg. Don't be expecting to left click and 1 tap a crusher.
I really like the agripina BAG.
Flamer is cool but people here will prolly hate. I think its cool tho.

1) Do I have blades of faith? If not, then I need something that can kill specialists and trappers at ranged.
2) Can my melee weapon kill crushers? If not, then I need something that can kill crushers.
If the answer to question 1) is yes and 2) is yes, then you can pick pretty much whatever you want. Personally, I really like the bolt pistol for the utility it brings, but most of the ranged weapons are fairly competent at one thing or another and can be a justifiable pick.
If the answer to question 1) is yes and 2) is no, then you're almost always going to be picking bolter.
If the answer to question 1) is no and 2) is no, then you need to reconsider what you're doing with your build.
For example,
Melee: Combat Blade (knife)
Ranged: Flamer
Blitz: Blades of Faith
High singletarget-damage melee weapon that can deal dmg to anything, AoE as ranged weapon for hordes, anti-Specialist weapon as Blitz.
Melee: Eviscerator
Ranged: Revolver
Blitz: Immolation Grenade
Pretty much same as above, except Blitz does the AoE while ranged deals with Specialists.
Every ranged weapon is good in one way or another.
