Solo play

Is this game viable for solo play for an average FPS player? I used to play L4D and beat it a few times solo with the bots on regular difficulty; would this be similar?

If the answer is don't bother, how is the matchmaking? How long to games take? Do people come and go in team like L4D used to do?

There's no solo play currently.
Matchmaking is quick. If a player drops out they are replaced with a bot until another spawns in.
Very rarely get failed missions, or toxic players. Get matches within a few seconds on Malice and up. Sometimes the mission will start with just you and three bots if you didn't get players right away, but in my experience get replaced by actual people shortly after.
Average mission time is anywhere from 20 to 25 mins, unless you have people who are book hunting...
People come and go more often on the higher tier difficulties - Heresy and Damnation.

You’re going to get a lot of salty replies from a lot of salty people over this.

The average Darktide player cannot solo this game at the highest difficulty. Not even close. Currently bots are rather useless and setting up a solo game takes a bit of gimmicks to begin with.

Games go from 20-40 minutes with random groups. People will cycle out on occasion but it’s not that bad… though at auric (highest difficulty) it seems more common.

Matchmaking itself isn’t bad. Lobbies are fast. Don’t expect any particular level of skill from your random match made teams though.

Thanx for the replies. I was going to say no if there was no solo; but it sounds like the co-op works well enough that I'm leaning towards getting it.

I don't play multiplayer if I can avoid it, and I didn't like L4D with your garden variety pug, but most of the people you get quickmatched with tend to be pretty decent. Long as you stick to the difficulty you should be in (personally it's 2 until level 15-20, then 3 until you reach the endgame and go up to 4) and play your guy well you will be fine.

Time for funny comment. I'd say half the players playing this game, are "solo". As in, they run off and do whatever they want, not a care in the world for the team or the outcome.

There is no solo play within the game. The solo mod keeps people from gaining anything permanent. So, if you use the mod, you will not be able to keep the experience, guns and so forth. The save is not on your computer, but on their servers, so if you gain anything, you will lose it once the mod is off.

Bots in their current state, are really dumb in this game. And you can't rely on them, unless you're good at not being picked up by any disabler.
