Has anyone else seen this? whats it for?

Seen it. I suspected that it meant you would fight one of the big monsters (Plague Ogryn, Beast of Nurgle), but that doesn't seem to be the case. So, don't know what it IS, but at least I know what it's NOT.

I thought it was just a symbol from the underlying map showing through.

It indicates which missions you have already done (as of the patch) and what highest tier level you did them at.
