Wonder how anyone is supposed to play this game without friends

So far I've only played with friends, not a single match through a public lobby, didn't even try. I have a level 26 Veteran, so I'm not a total noob anymore.

I've just created a second character, Level 1 Zealot, and tried to just join a public game to try out a different class. Quickplay isn't accessible without being in a strike time apparently (why, I thought the whole point of quickplay is throwing you into running matches where one or two slots are free?), I can't list my own party because the button is greyed out (I have no clue why, I've always hosted the party for my friends without problems), and I can't join a single existing party because most require level 30 and some require level 15. As far as I can tell, there was no way ingame to actually play without friends or leaving the game to find people on discord or forums to form a party.

Why not just allow people to play solo with bots to grind out the levels they need to get into the public parties?

This whole system overall seems like a really questionable choice to me. If I was a new player I would instantly refund the game, since I can't play in public lobbies as far as I can tell.

I really wish they would open up solo mode and let us play with bots. The bot tech is already there, and it would help noobs get some understanding of the game without holding back the people that don't seem to be willing to play with low-level noobs anyway.


To clarify: I'm NOT looking for people to play with, so please don't send friend requests etc.! I never intended to ever play a public game when I bought Darktide, I'm happy only ever playing this game with my friends. We're having a blast, it's fantastic! But... by the emperor... the experience for people who don't come in with friends to play together must be abysmally bad. I have never ever seen a reasonably popular multiplayer game where it was this hard to find a match.

That is a real shame because in terms of gamefeel, gamedesign, atmosphere, sounddesign, leveldesign, etc. this game is brilliant! I highly recommend you talk a friend or two into playing it with you!

Are you trying to play havoc with lvl 1 char lmao? You can play public with quickplay without friends. The level restrictions is to prevent "not a total noob" players to join higher difficulties just to insta die. Grind malice, then heresy, then whatever. Not hard, doesn't give much xp but they are fast.

Thanks a lot, that was quite helpful! Turning private match off made it possible to join instantly via quickplay. It's not very intuitive for the message to say "you need to be in a strike team" when it should say "you need to either disable 'private game' to join an ongoing public game via quickplay, OR be in a party to play a private game".

Not farming anything, keep your steam points. It was a genuine misunderstanding of how the "private game" setting that you need to enable to play a private game with your friends essentially locks you out of the regular matchmaking system - something that I still consider a noteworthy UX oversight.

Idk if this will help you OP as I'm not sure if you use mods, but you can use this mod to queue for missions that are no longer on the mission board.
This will allow you to play alone even when you don't have a friend online.

The second link will allow you to search for mission IDs. Find one you like, copy the link then paste it in game. Then queue the mission.
