they all have their own purposes. they can all do work.

surge happens to be my personal favorite next to purge (fire). but just because I prefer these two over the others, it doesn't mean I find these better. it just means I have more fun with them.

Void and Trauma are S tier
Purge is like B tier

I think surge is the worst still. It's been all over the place with bugs making it obscenely overpowered and then completely useless.

I’ve come to enjoy the surge staff for how quickly it can burn down armored units. The small amount of chaining it does is also nifty for taking out groups of gunners, without a mess explosion that might scatter them out of AoE range.

1: Surge/Purgatus
2: Voidstrike/Trauma

Pre nerf, Voidstrike was above Surge and Purgatus.

Void
Purgatus
Trauma
Surge

Void is still the savest option, deleates Elites/Specials with great dmg, good from close to "max" range, ok against hordes, ok stagger.
Perfect as Elitekiller in between Meele/Ability

Purgatus is horde-begone + High stagger, basicly no range but anything getting close is dead, also Stagger is rly high, 2 LMBs stagger a Mauler.
LMB spam can push Ragers charging you back to their spawn in a instant

Trauma basicly same as Purg but to apply the Delete/Stagger you need to charge+aim the ground mark. TBH thats as hard as going to toilete BUT..... Purg doesnt need this, so its Plce 3 for me. Also the stagger from explosion throws enemys arround wich can end up beeing a bit annoying.

Surge, does anything every other staff does but in worse.
Medium Dmg outperformed by Void + Purg can also outperform it, high stagger but on so few targets its basicly worthless in AT5. BUT.....but... it got Aim-assist. So its a good crutch for new player + on low density / difficulty there are so few elites it may seem like a good staff but that wears off once you get into AT5.

Trauma has a lot of advantages over purge

Better stagger, and applies it through its main way of dealing damage
Better range, both with the actual explosion and mouse 1
More effective against armor, even without rending shockwave
Deal its damage quicker, which lets you be more mobile

If by best you mean killing things faster and maximizing your DPS , staff that shoot bullets is the best staff. Pick guns if that's your thing

On serious note. Each staff has its utility and flaws. The one that suits your playstyle is the best staff

My personal rating though:

best: Surge staff
reason: auto aim, high damage, stun every enemy except bosses/monstrosities. Though it doesn't do great AOE compared to other staves, experienced players generally have no problem dealing hordes with their melee weapons anyway

mid: Voidstrike
reason: can theoretically stun everything including certain monstrosities, but requires a lot of practice because of its slow moving projectile and needs to land weak spot hits. deals good damage too. Great horde clear at range if enemies come in straight line, but it's terrible if enemies come in every direction. The explosion damage is so pitiful that it's basically nonexistant.

mid: purgatus
reason: can perma stagger most enemies with light attacks spam. Efficient peril cost.Takes forever to burn even the weakest enemies to death in high difficulties though. I can clear horde faster with my Illisi Force sword. I recommend using it primarily to weaken enemies and finish them off with your melee weapon. Has terrible range. You will be at the mercy of shooters, gunners, and snipers if you don't figure out ways to adjust.

worst : Trauma
reason: Technically has best CC, but I don't like it the way it is. it knocks everything on the floor from the center of your aim. A lot of times it knocks enemies toward you. Also if I'm your teammate cleaving enemies with my melee weapons, knocking enemies on the floor only makes my life difficult.

Top
Void Strike as you can ball down most threats at all ranges. Crit Build is God Teir. issues comes with the Gaze ability as that really stuffs with your ability to fire the staff.
Mid
Surge- the ability to temp stun all targets is good for team mates. still has some issues about it not Target Pathing.

Flamer Staff: Anti Horde really average Elite. anything that can die will die sooner or later under enough flame. also one of the best way to generate Warp Charges with a Flame Build.
Wiorest
Trauma- whiele yes it Technically has some of the best DPS and CC in the game. it Can't crit on it Second attack and it has 3 Blessing based on or use Crit. (warp Nexus, Blazing Spirit, Surge)

Trauma is as good as it ever was
Void is now a meme but since it's faster than BB it's useful and replaces it
Purgatus is the same as it was
Surge is in unmitigated trash

I used to love surge! But then it became over-powered after one upgrade, and then severely under-powered after another. o_o

I’m not sure where it sits now because I’ve largely stopped playing my Psyker, I’m all about that Ogryn Life now :3

It doesn't work like that. All staves are extremely strong if used and built right. Every single one of them. But Void is probably the easiest to make use out of on a passable level, and least restricting in terms of your overall build. But Void too becomes *much* stronger in skilled hands and in a proper build.

They're all in a good place, and they all have their downsides

We just don't have magic baby mode Plasma Staff like a certain other totally poor poor underpowered class and it's fine

They're also dependant on what other ability and melee weapon you bring along with you

If you play Purgatus you will need a can opener, whereas Surge Staff needs some crowd control melee weapon to make you whole

I just personally dislike Purgatus but mostly because it constantly blinds your team

There are a lot of people who think Surge Staff sucks, and these people should be ignored
