how does toughness actually work?
To many this might seem a silly question, but i'd rather look silly and get an answer than not know at all.

basically, how does toughness ACTUALLY work? the game says 'you take toughness damage before you take health damage', but this is just to some degree false. under the right circumstances even the most basic of mobs has done some health damage to me through a full bar of toughness, with plenty of other scenarios where from full to partial toughness me and my friends have taken health damage through toughness.

we've tried looking up info in other places but everything is just clearly wrong or just the same basic info of 'toughness stops health damage' that we know is false.

so, any info on this would be appreciated. because even playing for a long while now we just cant find an actual consistent pattern to how it works (though obviously trying to wholly watch it while playing is difficult).

on a melee hit it will reduce the health dmg you take, but when you take ranged dmg it will absorb 100% of the hit aslong as you have toughness to take the hit

The percentage of toughness you have remaining determines how much health damage you take.

If you have 90/100 toughness, the next melee hit you receive deals 10% damage. The amount doesn't actually matter. If you have 180/200 toughness, you still take 10% damage.

The advantage to toughness curios is that, on average, your toughness will be higher when you receive those hits, since the incoming damage remains the same, resulting in a higher amount of damage reduction.

see, it does make sense some level of melee gets past toughness, like you and the other guy said, but theres gotta be more at play because i know ive taken health damage at 100% toughness when according to that it should be blocking all damage on at least 1 hit.

It's possible that you took damage while in "over shield" where someone used an ult that gives you bonus toughness. For some reason a small amount of health damage bleeds when you take two melee hits in over shield

I do know that pox walkers also cause corruption damage. I don't believe toughness stops corruption at all. Alternately, is there a possibility you had nearly full toughness? Maybe caught a stray bullet prior to getting whacked? That would result in chip damage as well.

I suppose so but it was the blue bar, not the gold.
guess it could've been perfect timing with the color transition and i just didn't notice but that would be... very specific.

in the recent case that im thinking of? no. was very much at 100% toughness. possible it is what the other guy said and i had just gotten off extra toughness, but i dont remember for sure.

Or two simultaneous hits. I've seen that on myself, especially in those 10-12 rager spawns or the guys that insta-spawn behind you.

I notice it a lot because I tend to run vet more nowadays and we're the very definition of a glass cannon. Which can be fun as well. It's pretty awesome when you equip a catachan sword and float through 20 mobs without getting touched. Feel like a master swordsman.
