definitely Soon™, based on the fact that it goes on sale like clockwork (check steamdb) right around now, the fact that the year anniversary is coming up, and if nothing else, the incoming winter sales.

Likely the Wintersale around the 24th of next month. If your mate wants a cheap option, have them get a month of PC Gamepass. You can't transfer progress between that and Steam, but there is no real reason to get it on Steam and Gamepass costs like 9 bucks per month and it includes Darktide.

If they really like it, they can get the game on the sale next month.

Steam Autumn Sale should start in about 5-6 hours.
While not guaranteed to go on sale, it's quite likely.
