How does the story work?
Is this game's mission board suppose to be linear? Like when I do quick play I'm just on mission 2 or 4 or 3 or whatever?

Or am I suppose to view this as just a regular mission in a 40K logic of
"One Hive City district is bigger than all of America, mission all unique because they are actually in different areas and other players are doing missions in completely different areas in city"

more of the former. missions may or may not have anything to do story wise with one another and there's no real chronological order to them unlike in vermintide 2 for example.

What we do have for replayability is mostly tied to game mechanic. AI director can throw different stuff at you, the modifiers, the different difficulties.

There isn't any strict order to them.

They are technically single missions though, similar to VT2. Once you've secured the smelter area, when you replay that mission you are doing the same thing again. It isn't a similar mission in a different smelter area within the Hive.

The progression of the story is slow at the moment and often told via the vox broadcasts they release outside the game.

All we really know presently is "Big bad enemy leader (Wolfer) doing big bad stuff. Recently discovered that the Carnival area is one of their strongholds and being run by a pair of lieutenants known as the Twins. And they're a bit miffed that we stole their drugs."

I would expect that over time, the missions that we currently have will be removed/changed to reflect how the story progresses.
So, in a year or so, we might still be running through the smelter, but it'll be for different reasons/objectives.

This right here. This is the way. There are probably more smelters in a hive city then there are people in America. You could run the Smelter mission only for the rest of your life and still arguably be working on a completely 'unique' smelter in lore.

For my money, I prefer Darktide's generic mission setups as that lets me feel like I'm a tiny ant in this huge city doing these tasks.

You listen to dialogue, you listen to mission briefing, you watch cinematics, you put it all together:
Tertium under attack by Nurgle Plague unleashed by invading traitor guards Moebian Sixth > Player Characters in Prison Transport ship "Tancred Bastion" get attacked by heretics breaking out their Captain > Inquisitorial Agent takes survivors to Tertium > They form convict battalion strike force > "strike force" deploys > ♥♥♥♥ going south, we sabotage heretics, repair stuff, help scan plague samples, gather supplies for Melks Auric level operatives, some in the warband finally get basic flak and better weapons > there is a traitor among us > we must notify other agents about the traitor and Atoma status, can't use normal channels due to traitor, we go hack occupied Relay Station > we found traitor, she dead, no useful info was gathered, small fry > we must find out who supplies and supports heretics > Archivum Sycorax might have info, we raid it, interesting intel but nothing concrete > Hallowette caught wind of Heretics buying crystals used in production of some las weaponry, we intercept and steal it for her, she shares part of it with Melk so he keeps his mouth shut, no new info but another hit dealt to heretics > Morrow gets wind of this and also sends Rejects to recover the crystals to sabotage deals Moebian Sixth does with locals > some in the warband get better gear and weapons + access to Auric tier missions > as Moebian Sixth starts infecting more people, their production of Stimms becomes a potential plague source, we deploy into their home turf Habzone Carnival to take some Stimms for samping and sell uncontaminated ones to Commodore Alice Hallowette > First proper glimpse of enemy Scab leader through Morrow comm leech > with help of a shady merchant and Rogue Trader's Enginseer we locate Obscura Den and attack on Stimm production facility in Warrens > waiting for continuation.

this is untrue.

the story is everything around you. the main characters are morrow, zola, misozi, melk, hallowette, and hadron, with rannick and brahms as supporting characters.

you are a reject, and your job is to do the ♥♥♥♥ work the main characters need doing to save the city of Atoma. you are on the mourningstar which has been sent to cleanse nurge's heresy from Tertium.

the mission board is a randomized selection of threats in the hive city of Tertium, which are always changing (within the 8 zones and 15 maps available). as a reject within the 40k universe, it's your job to do the dirty work.

don't think of the game as a linear RPG, it's just a hack n slask game. all you do is hack n slash heretics. the rest is just fluff and noise and setting.

all darktide is is a modern 1-4 player coop game like Gauntlet. it doesn't need more story. "atoma compromized. cleanse heresy." and it's missing the 1-player mode.

Well if there was a story, you would know what to do and where you are going. There is no story, but to just join missions and somehow survive.

The story is essentially that in a universe built on the principle of "shut up and do as you're told", you got in trouble somehow for not shutting up or doing as you were told. But then something happens and you've been given a second chance to "shut up and do as you're told."

Now you've proven that you can shut up and do as you're told, you get to spend the foreseeable future shutting up and doing as you're told, while some stuff is happening in a hive city on a planet.
