I don't think it's necessarily on the same enemy, just as long as you keep swinging through your combo. Breaking it up with a block or a push or taking long enough between swings to break the combo will reset the chain.

Just keep swinging, hitting targets matters.

Every hit wich follows the Animation-chain.
Basicly keep spamming hits and you get chained hits.
Stop hitting for 1-2s and the Animation-chain resetts and you need to start again.
