The Vermintide forum claims that 40K is made up and is not real Warhammer Universe
They claim that 40K was just a made up out of nothing in the 80's as a cash grab and an attempt by games workshop to Grift the uneducated consumers by making them think that 40K was warhammer because at the time Alien and Terminator was sci fi hits.

But I am confused here if 40K is imaginary, fictional and made up then what is Warhammer?

A hammer used for war, duh.

I do know the Horus heresy was made up to explain why the opposing factions were using the same models.

so warhammer fantasy (just called warhammer back then) was first, and 40k was a sci-fi spin off with more humour that overtook fantasy in popularity because...i dont know and dont care enough to look but i imagine it had something to do with rocket launching machine guns.

Warhammer 40k started as rogue trader, which is a table top RPG like Dungeons and Dragons.
Later it turned into that table tops trategy game, that happened pretty much at the same time, as space crusade came out in 1990.

so yeah, it kind of is made up... but so is warhammer - lol

But it had to begin somewhere

But if its true that games workshop was just grifting and cashing in on the sudden sci fi craze then it's a good thing because 40K is soooo much better than that old ugly mid century war hammer.

Also original war hammer vermintide is also fake totally made up fiction.

I never seen rats that big in real life.

Far as I am concerned this game is way better than Vermintide 2 and 40K is a hell of a lot cooler being space sci fi

Fiction is made up?!?

NONSENSE, HERESY!
No 40k really happened in the year 40k, praise the Emperor, don't be a heretic.

The old lore was that the entire 40K universe took place in a wizard's crystal ball. But GW retconned it.

well both universes are not the same, even when some fanfiqers tryed to make it so (same like skyrim and Fallout)

at the start the modells where not even from GW but citadel,

@Jhea: Space Crusade was a Table Top Space Hulk Spinoff published by MB, it was named Star Quest and Space Crusade was the PC Game Ports Name (the TT Game must still be stored in one of my game courners with all expansions) where you already got the newer Modells from WH40K SE (the first edition modells before that where real crude) . it was a derivate and more mainstremed for more players (base game got evil side and 3 chapters, one expansion brought Eldar as a 4th exploring faction for cooperaten with the chapters/single campain/ 3 way fights.

WH40K got the benefit of needing less modells for an army than Fantasy (with my Fantasy Skaven army i woud have gone insane when i dont made myself some Bases to store the units at for instant move of the whole Unit instead of every single Modell on the Table), thnx to the fact how units are composed and moved. the not so well recepted "Age of Sigmar" Warhammer Fantasy Rule incarnation tryed to adopt to that a little it looks like, but got stomped for all ist simplifications by the players.

so in the end: Both is GWs doing, more or less, as full Fledged game systems.
for Vermintide and Darktide, they are both not derived from any System i know, guess nearest call woud be Mortheim/Necrumunda, but this 2 where small scale formats, where 2 gangs fight again each other in a destroyed fantasy city/ a Hive City side. not 4 vs the horde...

The Question Nov 10, 2023 @ 4:05pm
Technically they aren't wrong, 40k is a spin-off of WHF and was a bit more tongue in cheek akin to Judge Dredd and Dune, until writers tried to turn it into a space opera and then "players" ruined it by making it "serious". But in actuality, the universe of 40k is in fact a pocket dimension in WHF (literally exist in a bottle in a wizard academy) so yeah 40k is probably some student wizard's finals project

You are made up. Made up of gold. :spurdo:

The market for lead figures was DnD mainly, and customers usually didn't need many. So they made up Warhammer to sell far more. But that's the business perspective. From a customer perspective they gave some folks a new and very fun past-time. So it's a good time grab on the part of the customers, and a cash grab from the business.

Which is why we all love capitalism.
