long answer: melee swings work by drawing an invisible mesh along the path of the swing. depending on your timing, you can easily extend the swing arc substantially. the only drawback is that if you move your camera TOO fast, it will draw the mesh with gaps in between, and won't effectively cover the whole area.
this guide from vermintide 2 contains several videos that use developer-console settings to demonstrate this concept in action better than anything I've seen elsewhere and better than I could explain it

this video in particular demonstrates what happens when you move your view/aim during the middle the attack animation
notice the wireframe rendering of the path of the swing whose timing matches the animation itself
(and in particular, watch what happens when he adjusts his aim during the swing)
it works exactly the same way in darktide, although they recently changed the hit-detection to be more flexible, so it favors head hitbox impacts more
but if you are trying to fight 5 enemies who have you surrounded from different sides, and your weapon is capable of cleaving through all 5 enemies, there is nothing in the game that stops you from adjusting your swing mid-animation to ensure that you impact all 5
in fact, this is part of the why the melee combat in -tide style games has such a high skill ceiling.
it is not mere mindless clicking, it requires considerable aim and finesse to get the most out of your weapon's swings, and offers considerable rewards for perfecting this technique
