You might also like to try the slug shotgun. If nothing else it's amazing at picking off specialists and elites, and at staggering crushers and bulwarks.
Revolver is piece of crap, it was before and now with the throwing knifes it is even more useless
As for the shredder, haven't tried it yet myself but since you now have tons of talent options, you can spec for extra damage the closer you are, and extra crit and dmg in general. Same as vets and psykers. From just looking at the talents it seems you can build to shredders for very nearly the same power except this time you have to actually specialize in it instead of just relying on the broken OP weapon taking care of it on its own.
Albeit it really Depends on what You want to Play like.
When I am thinking about weapon choices I think about what 'tool' they are to solve a problem: Horde Clearning, Priority Target Engagement, Support, and Crowd Control.
I use a Crit-Sword Build which can clear medium sized hordes with ease so I need something to take out specials very fast - the Revolver does that.
I also like VERY fast game play and the revolver is fast - fast fast.
Post Script:
I also use the "Prayer Blitz" ability which is both crowd control and support. So my build covers all four objectives. Its one of the few "Oh S.H.I.T." buttons in the game and can easily save from an ambush or from being over run.
The zealot crit build revolves around the node which gives 1.5s off ability cooldown per crit. With the "Flurry" swords built around crit I can get my "Bliz" ability off cooldown very fast when pushed by hordes. It feels like 75% uptime, ngl.
