Mutants don't give me trouble and their hp isn't too high IMO.
I'd say dogs win the prize for most annoying enemy for me, trappers come in close second.
I've killed mutants with my charged force sword in 1 or 2 swings.
The only time a mutant is an actual threat is during maelstrom V when other specials screen their ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
The dogs seem off. They seem to have an aoe stagger that I'm not too sure they need. The dodging of their pounce? I guess a lot depends on the server. I used to be able to dodge and push them easy enough, right now it seem less consistent which of course leads to frustration, especially in the higher difficulties.
When within X meters they lock on to you and keep running in a straight line, so a simple dodge is enough to evade them as long as you stay in their "LoS" so to speak. If you dodge behind corners, they will instead keep running the shortest route to you until they have that straight line. So if you hide behind a corner, they'll run around it and by the time they're locked on you probably won't have time to dodge anymore. That's something you can learn and prepare for. Every single time a mutie hits you, is because you played wrong.
Mutants to me represent the one single perfect special in this entire game. They do exactly what they are supposed to do, and pretty much never bug, glitch, cheat, or anything else. Even the sound bug & instant spawn bugs that basically involve every single other special in the game, does not affect mutants (or at least it's super rare). Their role is simply pressure. Alone, a mutant or 2 are useless. Yeah they take a few seconds to kill depending on your weapons, but besides that they are no threat. But the more of everything else is going on, the more serious the threat of mutants gets. Dying to 3+ mutants during a massive mixed horde in T5 HISTG when you're the last 1-2 people alive can feel overwhelming but it's still a fair way to go.
Meanwhile with other specials you frequently get stuff like bombers denying critical zones indefinitely while staying out of sight, and the moment you kill one another 2 take its place. Trappers and dogs spawn with no sound or warning and the first time you even know they're there is when you're already down. Both of them but especially dogs still ignore stagger whenever they feel like it and just disable you through it instead (it's way better now than before, but still not fixed). Snipers can shoot instantly with no warning, so you're instant killed before even knowing one had spawned. Bursters can still spawn and explode instantly virtually on top of you, or literally on top of you in case you're standing next to a spawn door. Etc etc.
As annoying as muties can be, they are fair. I don't even remember the last time I died to a mutie without it being my own fault, or because I didn't have what it takes. Meanwhile with other specials save gunners, that happens at least on a weekly basis. Sometimes several times a day or even in a single game.
They are more durable than alot of other maniacs but they aren't insanely hard to kill.
Please note: I can one shot them with my Psycher's sword although it takes decent peril and warp charges. (and it doesn't have 25% maniac damage, it is running Unyielding)
I can one-shot them with the Slug shotgun on my Vet with Ult up and a headshot.
Orgyn's can one shot them with a nade.
Pretty much every class can spec/build to one shot them but it may not be the best idea.
Dogs are still jank magnets that control how you play and move around, and still feel janky. I'm hoping they're still working on them.
