because it's not p2p anymore

creating server-sided matches just per 1 player is quite expensive

maybe they will find a workaround... someday

Free epic game servers are quite expensive. And they couldnt let you play locally or offline, you would mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of the game and give yourself all the beta helmets. Wouldn't be fair.

Surely they're not free, where'd you hear that?

Now I'm sure it's incredibly complex and there's a lot of money spent on stuff somewhere. But on the rubber servers, not much I'm afraid.

Because Darktide is a live-service. In a live-service, anything and everything has to be monetized in some way, especially player comfort.

In Fatshark's view, the ability to play alone, away from public matchmaking, is a player comfort, therefore it has to be monetized. Especially when said player comfort also cuts out live, in-game advertising of one of their biggest long-tail revenue sources; real-money cosmetics.

If you want to earn that player comfort, you have to sell the game to a friend and rope him in to playing the game with you. That is the biggest reason why you need 2 people to play Private mode; it was turned into a "friend referral" reward to offset the lost advertising of real-money cosmetics.

All other stated reasons about server costs and all that are just there to make the decision sound more palatable and less money-grubby.
that sounds really scummy i thought fatshark were the good indie guys :/

tbh I'm surprised you can do it with just 2 people and this is very gracious on fatsharks part, servers aren't cheap, matchmaking people into full groups is much better for this arrangment with the dedicated servers

umm FS uses AWS

if you want to play private game with just bots you should do it on vermintide 2 because it works; the bots are your bots meaning they have your equipment and load outs; there is a workshop mod for better bots; I personally loved running with my bots on vermintide 2 but the bots in darktide are GARBO with GARBO not worth your time

Fatshark is an AA studio with 180 staff.

They aren't some low budget team working in their garage. They just try to keep up a reputation of being indie-ish so people will cut them slack for their incredibly low output of content and numerous bugs.

Yup so does Epic.

Hedge when asked said they were using EOS. That's also why Darktide uses the free EAC, look it up its in these pages here from last year.

Not wanting to beat that dead horse, but those Amazon servers are glorified potatoes. The community asked for *private dedicated servers* since VT1, then this all devolved into the monkeypawed situation we have now. They werent able to scale up for 100k players at launch without massive queue times, they are not able to scale now for solo play at 3k. They just can't run a live service, simple as.
