Warhammer 40,000: Darktide
Very poor performance (FPS) on a decent-ish setup
Hi! I am running the game on a 1440p monitor, but during heated battles, my FPS always seems to drop down to around 45.

I've played with the settings and DLSS for almost no noticeable change, made sure everything is up to date and ready but to no avail.

What am I to do? I run the game on a Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU and a 13th gen i9-13900K CPU. Is my hardware not good enough for the game, or am I doing something wrong? Please help.

OP, you need to do some trouble shooting. I get 80-100 fps at 4k with far inferior hardware: 3080 and 10900k.

You’re not using ray tracing right? DLSS should be set to quality on a 4090, i run balanced on my 3080.

Interesting, I did not notice this, but I don't even have ray tracing as an option in the erm... Options menu. What should I do in this case?

EDIT: I've given some thinking, and I had a thought. Before I installed Darktide, I used to have a different earlier nvidia GPU (the 2080). Could it be possible that the game failed to register me changing from one nvidia GPU to the other? I have decided to reinstall the game just in case, and will make another edit to mention the result here

If you don't see ray tracing as an option, it could be due to your motherboard's BIOS version being too old.

Back when I first got an RT capable card I didn't have RT as an option either, until I updated the BIOS.

I will troubleshoot this, but I quite recently (june) bought a new motherboard!
With the improved performance, is Ray tracing still not showing as an option in settings menu?

Also some other tips: when the game starts it has a launcher with its own settings menu. I would put your CPU threads to 8 since your CPU has 8p cores (unless someone with a 13900k wants to weigh in on the appropriate number of threads). There, Ray tracing should also appear as an option, usually set to “custom.”

I turn off ray tracing at the splesh screen menu manually every time i start the game.

There are some sliders at the bottom of the in-game settings for things like ragdolls etc. these realllly burden the cpu. Try lowering those to increase perf
Open the user_settings.cfg with notepad and look for the Raytracing related functions. A few updates ago raytracing was by standard for everyone on max quality, even if you have no rt capable pc. Honestly just use this file always if you want to change something.

Just so I don't keep people in the dark here (but I am still in the process of troubleshooting), the problem doesn't seem to be just darktide needing a reinstall, but my windows as well, as the auto-updater broke down and it stopped updating... since 2020.

I'm in the process of trying to fix and manually install the updates, but the path so far has been... labyrinthine. I will keep this post updated in case it goes well!

P.S. it's not just windows though, it's obviously also darktide too as just reinstalling it doubled my FPS sooo yeah.

Sounds like it might be worth trying: update mobo bios and especially chip set drivers.

If it's an older model, it might have lain dormant in some warehouse for quite a while and thus it could have that old BIOS which doesn't support ray tracing yet.

So, final update, the answer indeed was updating windows manually (by using the "Windows Update Assistant for you future troubleshooters that might be out there), as the newer versions come with all the necessary things to unlock options like "Frame Generation".

I would like to thank all of you for putting up with me today, and an especially big thanks to Pino who went out of their way to add me and help in pointing me in the right direction. You guys are all gigachads.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, but after all of this, my FPS rocketed from 80 to around 300!

The other weird thing is I'm pretty sure I uninstalled it last night, but I only just booted up my PC this morning, loaded up steam and its automatically installing itself?

It's a malware now. LOL....

Seemed that way but I think it was because i quit steam and turned off the PC before it had fully uninstalled :)
Nice, yeah your hardware is as fast as it gets so there was something just off. This game is pretty incredible looking when you’ve got it all set up.
I don't honestly know what's wrong with your system, I run the game with a 5800x3d & 4070 at 140+ fps using DLSS Quality & all high w/ no RT. Even running without DLSS at all, I maintain a fairly stable 70 - 80 in native rendering.

Edit: Nevermind, didn't realize it'd been resolved. Glad to hear that a windows wipe & reinstall fixed it for ya.

For the record I reinstalled which didnt make much of a difference however, disabling Nvidia Low Latency mode actually helped a lot and I have acceptable frame rates again. However, i used to be play with it enabled and with far fewer and less grievous frame rate dips.
