it is not accurate to assume you are a "typical" rank-and-file trooper any more than it is accurate to say that colonel schaeffer's last chancer's are just 12 random prisoners force to blow stuff up together
all of the rejects are far above what one would expect from the 'average' psyker, ogryn, fanatic, or imperial guard veteran
you might be 'only human', just some unlucky sob who pissed the wrong people off, not some genetically enhanced superhuman space marine, but the inquisition is only giving you the chance to prove yourself when they discover that you are an extremely skilled and exceptional individual
ie someone who is far more valuable alive than promptly executed just because you don't matter and you "might be a heretic"
if you were just a random average nobody prisoner after you help zola in the tutorial, you probably would have been shipped back to prison or even executed on the spot (just in case, you understand)
an inquisitor's warband, and especially the inquisitorial retinue squad itself, ranks among the top 5 most elite "regular human" soldiers in the entire galaxy right up there with the tempestus scions and the sisters of battle
