Character Penances don't unlock when you fail a mission?!

I completed a character penance for Preacher Dashing and Melee kill a Mutant, the Penance unlocked. We then failed the mission and the penance remains locked.
Is this correct? If so....why.

Have not yet been in that situation, but in Vermintide 2 you do get the explicit "complete the mission to finish the challenge" thing here and there.. so it might be legacy code.

now that's weird, i recall finishing a penance then failing but the penance is still completed when i got back to the lobby.

Perhaps this is part of the joyful bug where weeklies give you the mid-mission update that they are completed, only to remain uncompleted when you actually head back to Melk.

This was an issue/bug shortly after release. And looks like it is still in the game. Maybe we just don't see this as a complaint that often because most people who care about them, already got these penances. But might be still an issue

Sounds like a bug, I've definitely completed penances then failed the mission without losing the penance unlock previously.

I didn't see any failure from losing mission. Massage is appeared immediately when you achieve the goal and it means you get the bonus not related to mission result.

If you didn't see achievement massage while you think you made it, it means you actually failed in penance mission. There were many uncertain cases for me similar to this, believed I did but actually didn't.

On the mutant penance, you can see clear massage immediately after killing it properly. You can be confused because it requires detailed and precise conditions for clear. I tried many times for it. It is harder to get than what you think if you don't know exact and proper conditions.

You mustn't have triggered it. Penances unlock mid-mission, so unless you didn't actually fulfil the condition there's no way you would miss out.

I barely remember the conditions. You need to kill mutant when it is rushing. I recommend to do it with hammer. Actually, it is a mission for technique training of hammer. Making One-shot with chastise and charged attack to defend people from mutant rush.

Use activation first and hold attack for strong move(don't release). Use chastise to left side of mutant not releasing LMB.(direction doesn't matter but it would be easier) Release it after you get to the mutant. Timings for activation and release are very important

penances unlock the moment you get them as long as they don't specifically state "survive the mission" or whatever.

If it really unlocked (and that one is fiddly from my own experience, since I can do the ideal challenge but still struggled to do it so it counts for a friend) you do not need to finish the mission or even be successful with the mission. It might have not actually triggered that penance or you messed up when checking it in the penance menu later, or the servers bugged out for you and it did not save anything in that mission.

I was actively trying to do it during the mission. I did it correctly and the Penance DID pop in the top right. After we failed the mission the "you failed the emperor" DID appear and I clicked continue or whatever in the bottom right to leave to the lobby. After that I checked the Penance page.... still locked.

Weird, maybe it's a case by case basis. I've only ever seen people do that penance on low difficulties to guarantee the mutant kill, so failing the mission was not a realistic issue to us. However I specifically did multiple penances in private lobbies (for heresy and malice penances) where we deliberately died after achieving them.

Weird.. I actually finished a few penances on failing a mission in the beginning. penances like finish the mission with 100 percent accuracy. Or dont be meleed as a sharpshooter. Yeah obviously you need to finish the mission for those.

They patched some of those, specifically the zealot penance where you need to finish with less than 1 wound in less than 20 minutes (now you have to win)
