Fatshark is [Still] Dead.... (Updated 10/09)
UPDATE [10/09]
That's right, I'm back again.

Class overhaul change so far has felt REALLY REALLY good, a lot of much needed breath has been breathed back into the game...

... But honestly I still wouldn't recommend this game to people. The fact that they also chose now to release the most coveted skins yet (krieg) and also raised the price shamelessly on those skins, while introducing a whole slew of new issues and bugs into the game is just... Wow dude. The audacity of this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ company.

I also want to drop a hot take here... I don't like Fatshark's modifiers to missions. Like, the Auric missions are absolutely terrible and tedious to play. My idea of fun isn't "more". Throwing more specialists at the player, more elites, more walls of ogryn, more bosses (though the mini bosses are fun)... It's not solving the issue, it's just tedious and frustrating. It highlights that this games formula doesn't really work. What I mean by that is, the gameplay and controls feel really good but the enemies and missions do not - it feels REALLY bad when you lose, like you're playing a TTRPG with a GM that throws unwinnable situations at you and then celebrates like he won some great victory when you inevitably finally lose.

And you can say skill issue or get good or whatever... But the fact of the matter is this isn't that kind of game, and it's just a wall that honestly most players aren't going to want to overcome. ESPECIALLY when overcoming it means fighting the terrible loot system Darktide has, and being nickle-and-dime'd by the cash shop.

And yeah, it's pessimistic, but dude - there's still bugs and issues that have existed since day 1. I want to give Fatshark praise, and I want to say damn fine job on the class re-balancing and reworks, but this is what should have been in place Day 1. Fatshark knows this too - these are all lessons they have learned from Vermintide 2 and there is no excuse to be relearning them again for Darktide.

Enemies can still shoot through the floors on the desert maps, enemies still just randomly spawn behind you - not emerge from doors or jump over barricades, literally just spawn next to you.

The maps are still formulaic and unrecognizable from each other. There's no breath of life or new mission design. Every single mission modifier is just "spawn more specialists". There are still not nearly as many weapons as Fatshark promised to add to the game.

Talents are once again broken (can confirm Demoltion Team does not work on the new grenades), tooltips are once again badly written and unclear, some talents feel outright bad compared to their counterparts and mechanics that were changed for QoL have been reintroduced (why are we still losing entire stacks instead of 1 at a time for Psyker's right capstone?)

And we're coming up on a year since this game has been live...

It's not enough, not nearly enough.

So yeah, unless you have a group of friends AND are a diehard 40k fan, there isn't a lot to love here. There are far better games with far more respect for your time than this. Fatshark is at best incompetent, and at worst just downright malicious with its game design mechanics.

I'll be updating the below as my group plays and finds (inevitably) more and more BS and broken stuff.

Pour one out boys, because it's time to admit this game sucks. The data mining also shows that nothing is going to change for the better, this is just a cash grab and we all bought it hook, line, and sinker.

I'll go first on listing grievances, feel free to add to it.

Classes:
  • Classes are badly designed, especially orgryn and psyker. Only Veteran can actually do what the game asks - which is range AND melee combat.
    • They've done a good job of balancing the classes since launch, and I'd say they're all in a good place.
  • Lack of classes - down from 15 to 4 from Vermintide 2 to Darktide.
  • There are now 4 classes with 3 branching talent paths with some customization. This has been a much needed and welcome solution, though it's still less than Vermintide 2 in terms of content.
  • Dataminers discovered that 1 new subclass/quarter... Not per character, literally 1 new subclass every 3 months.

Gameplay:
  • Can honestly no longer tell what is a bug and what is a feature. Can't tell if the game is just broken, or if we're losing because of something we're doing...
  • Lots of misleading tooltips
  • Lots of stuff just doesn't do anything (Vets don't use Covering Fire it's literally turned off) SO HILARIOUSLY THEY BROKE DEMOLITION TEAM. Still have broken talents. A closer look at Fatshark's forums, and it is once again easier to make a list of what isn't broken than what is broken currently.
  • Lies about bug fixes, like with Power Sword
  • The datamine guide - why is there damage modifiers for sprint and slide? Why do guardsmen take double damage while sprinting? Why are zealots immune to damage while sliding? etc etc etc.
  • Formulaic mission design... I keep reaching 6/7 missions complete and honestly cannot tell you which mission I'm missing because they're all the same "go here, push 3 buttons/move 3 batteries".
  • Disabler enemies (dogs and trappers) really feel outdated and don't need to be in the game. If you insist on them remaining in the game, at least give I-frames while you're pinned/netted/getting pummeled by a mutant.
  • Bulwark shields. Whoever did the hitbox on the shields... Why? If I can swing around the shield and hit his hand or his head from the front let that count as a hit. Right now bulwarks are just... Tedious and annoying. I've shot at the side of their heads as a veteran, but because I wasn't "behind them" it counts as a shield hit.
  • Shotgunner "assault/raider" squads don't count as ranged enemies for the Guardsmen... Honestly thought this would be fixed by now. Also, they're easily the most devastating enemies in the game because they will just constantly shoot you (often through hordes, etc) instead of ever coming into melee.
  • Broken spawns. Have literally seen squads spawn on top of allies. Snipers will spawn in range and shoot at you almost instantly as they spawn. Never ending spawns after objective rooms. Etc. etc. etc...
  • Also the rate of specials and disablers needs to be reduced dramatically, and there should never be 4 trappers/hounds on the field at any given time... Let alone 4 trappers literally interpenetrating each other and Gatling gunning their nets.
  • Chainweapon desyncs, chainweapons seem to desync a lot and not register hits. This especially sucks cause you'll still get stuck in the sawing animation... Again, a bug I assumed would be fixed by now.
  • Bots being generally useless and having bad loadouts (why can't we use our alt characters as bots like in Vermintide 2...?)
  • The lack of a solo mode that was promised to be delivered in December of 2022... ( https://forums.fatsharkgames.com/t/community-comm-link-2nd-march-2023/76199/120 )

    • I genuinely don't even know where to start with this section. This is largely the most important list IMO and these are all still huge issues in the game today. What really gets me is some of them have been addressed, but are still broken (looking at you, chainsaw desync).
    • I have to go and refresh my knowledge on the datamine stuff, but not sure if there's much interest in the game for it to have up to date data... I'd assume a lot of things are features for whatever terrible reason.
    • I will acknowledge that some of the blatantly just broken/off things have been fixed, such as Covering Fire, but again - why would you launch a game with a core feature turned off?!

Penances:
  • Just delete them all, they encourage toxic play styles and are impossible to do. Actively make the game worse.
    • They did in fact delete the penances and replace them with new ones. Also appreciate the old ones are still available, and that the especially toxic ones are private game only.
  • Not NEARLY enough unlockable cosmetics. The priority was definitely to give the community the barest minimum of cosmetics and then stuff all the good stuff in the MTX store. Why not make tons of inquisition cosmetics players can unlock, and make "lore breaking" cosmetics (like the steel legion armor for vets) MTX?
    • Personally, I think they need to add even more. If they continue to rotate penances and add new free cosmetics, that would be hype. There's still a dramatic imbalance between what's in the shop and what's available for free, with a lot of shop items being... Interesting.
    • This is also a great example of why MTX stores are bad for games - the game becomes more about the MTX store than the proper game itself... But this is a industry issue so I digress.
    • Still an issue, and they didn't update the penances with the rework to talent trees, making it pretty convoluted and weird to unlock a lot of the penances now.

Armory Store:
  • Completely RNG!
  • Seems to be weighted towards NOT giving players character specific items... If you like Eviserators, for example, don't hold your breath on a good one showing up.
  • Whites and Greens are more valuable than Blues because of how the store assigns stats.
  • There is no way to get a weapon you want - if you're looking for a really good lasgun, you'll probably only see autoguns for days. Especially bad on psykers.
    • So this is an interesting topic... The armory store is still weird, in that whites/greens are better than blues - especially with the forge and how they cannot have tier 3 or 4 traits.
    • Personally, I'm content with the armory now - especially since the Emperor's Gift has been reworked and improved. This was one of the best changes, imo.

MTX:
  • Reeks of Tencent. Has over 150 items in its database, and is the only thing not broken.
The gold store (non money store) only has a handful of cosmetics, and they're all just lazy recolors of armors.
  • And with that said, if you're fortunate enough to complete the hardest penances in the game there are no recolors available of the best armor sets.
  • Also, cosmetics from the art are just missing outright. No storm trooper helmet with green goggles for the Veteran or Flak Armor for the ogryn.
  • (New!) Rotating cosmetics stores that create fake scarcity, in game currency, currency packs that don't line up with the cost of items (instead of directly buying what you want)... All of these are things that should be outright condoned in any game they show up in.
    • All of this still applies! Yay, 2023 gaming!
    • Yes - I know they added more recolors of free armors, particularly the harder ones, but would still like to see more and still going to condemn the MTX store across the board.
    • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ price increase on the krieger packs with less cosmetics for the price. ♥♥♥♥ off.

Crafting:
  • The only existent crafting in the game is upgrading weapons, which is completely RNG.
  • The economy for crafting (diamantine and plasteel) is so badly balanced it's a joke. You don't earn enough plasteel from missions.
  • No point in engaging with crafting until you hit level 30.
  • The nature of crafting and how the store works means that you'll be waiting for WHITE or GREEN weapons instead of blues in the shop.
  • Good weapons are regularly ruined by getting terrible blessings, and blessings each have 3 levels that as of now you cannot improve or reroll.
    • The forge is actually really well done. Only complaint is why would you ever launch a game without a core element like this being complete?!
    • The deconstructing items for collecting traits feels good and gives purpose to low level crafting and fixes the issue of high potential weapons being ruined, and the economy has been fixed to encourage more crafting! Yay!
    • Still bad and still an issue, I have enough diamantine to make a diamantine throne for the Emperor.

Contracts:
  • Stupid and waste of time. Store is worse than the gold store. Contracts range from impossible to tedious.
    • Still not a huge fan of what they have, they're pretty phoned in, but significantly improved.
    • You need these now for high tier traits on weapons, and the available contracts aren't nearly as terrible as they were to complete.
    • Would love to see these be always on rather than having to talk to Ser Melk to enable them.

Customization:
  • Barebones, personality is the only choice that matters and the samples are bad representations of the actual voices. Good luck, hope you get one you like. The voicelines are great, as expected from Fatshark, but the rest of character creation is a waste of time and you can just throw it away.
  • The only unlockable armors in the game are all extremely similar "upgrades" of the prior down tier of armor... And you can only buy recolors of the lower armors... So if you want to NOT spend money in the MTX you're going to look like everyone else.
    • Yeah this is still a serious issue I'd like to see fixed.

Story:
LMAO what happened to Dan Abnett? There's no story. You get a string of 6 cutscenes of everyone telling you how much you suck and that you're a waste of oxygen. Also there's a traitor. Don't worry they kill the traitor at level 30. And congrats! You're now a full member of the Inquisitor's Warband.

That's it. That's the entire story. Sorry for the spoilers, I guess?

  • This is still an issue, still a sore spot, and new missions still have no story elements. Fatshark needs to rethink this and reevaluate how to approach this, cause this ain't it

Community/Quality of Life:
My disclaimer here is I'm not 100% sure what is and isn't accurate here anymore. You don't have to leave the group to go into the Grinder anymore and test weapons, which is cool. But reading back through this, and it isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things...
  • No stay in group options, or ways to block and avoid toxic players.
  • The Mourningstar, while pretty, is pretty much a downgrade from the castle in Vermintide 2. What used to be a good hang out and a place to view someone's progress is completely traded out for a lazy lobby with strangers.
  • No private Mourninstar for friends, or anything to do in said Mourningstar except stare at each other (as opposed to V2 training area and parkour puzzles or DRG's bar, soccer, dancing, barrel game.... DRG is so good).
  • I get why, I know Fatshark wants you to see cool cosmetics people have and spend money... It's just such a stupid excuse for degrading the pre-game experience.
  • And overall because the game is so unbalanced and frustrating, players are frustrated and taking that out on each other... Gatekeeping builds, characters, etc.
  • The community is pretty much dead at this point, but if comments like below are true then Fatshark is completely failing at moderating some pretty unacceptable (and basic) stuff.
Disclaimer: this original post was deleted, so take it with a grain of salt, but still honestly a bad way of handling situations like this.

Fatshark:
Finally, and it cannot be overstated, is that this is a pattern for Fatshark. They have done this time and time again, and frankly this is the worst time they've done this... Darktide is by far their worst release yet.
Fatshark needs to wake up, communicate, and understand that they cannot take advantage of their players and expect people to keep playing their games... I'm definitely not going to buy anymore Fatshark games at launch, since the game won't really be worth playing until 1 or 2 years later.

Conclusion
So yeah, another of my favorite developer teams has fallen hard... My fault really, got hyped for a game... Stupid thing to do in 2022. Hopefully they can turn it around, but the MTX stuff and the misdirection with the advertising really makes it hard to trust Fatshark.

7/05/2023
So I'll keep updating this as interest in it remains, but the core gameplay is still very much lacking. I think my tolerance level for the game is like 2 games once a month, and I've pretty much fully gone back to playing DRG as my go to coop game.

So overall, Fatshark needs a seriously BIG content drop to regrow interest in the game. The new weapons are cool, but they're just different flavors of what already existed...
We need new characters and new subclasses, badly.

I will give some credit to the work done so far, but Fatshark has slowed down in steam and the last few content drops (while novel) are not nearly enough to right the wrongs that this game's launch had.

This is still largely a dead game, and it's going to go down in history as a game with literally infinite potential that dropped the bag in every way it could.

Also ♥♥♥♥ microtransactions.

To clarify somethings:
- I do enjoy this game a lot, that's why I took the time to write this out and vent my feelings.
- Yes it is melodramatic, that's how you get people to read things.
- I sincerely hope ya'll are having fun with the game (because I honestly still am) but we can play the game and still be critical and want it to be better.
- It's not a skill issue, I've got hundreds of hours in V2, DRG, GTFO, and now Darktide... I get around, this genre is my jam.
- Going off the global achievements... Pretty sure I've seen more content then 98.8% of the player base.

Finally, you're welcome to disagree with me. If you love everything about this game and are content I'm genuinely happy for you. For me, I just want to see Fatshark fix this game and not ruin it with ♥♥♥♥♥♥ MTX and meta design decisions.

1/7/2023

Fleshed out some of the fields I skipped on originally, like the MTX and store and crafting.
Also as of 1/7/2023 still no word from Fatshark...
But they released a Vox Transmission thing on Youtube... So we got that going for us, which is nice.

Thanks to everyone who keeps posting! Please keep listing every critique you have about the game!

Also remember to not feed the trolls.
Unless it's a mine cart worth of gunpowder.

So... We're going on a month of radio silence from Fatshark, which is honestly more unacceptable than anything else they have done.

We need something. An apology, a crystal clear plan of action, and a "this is how we ♥♥♥♥♥♥ our customers, but we're going to fix it." kind of live stream or something.

What we don't need are more vox transmissions and lazy world building... The game doesn't work, is getting stale, and the microstransactions are ALREADY out of control.

1/12/2023

Added some more grievances to gameplay section.

1/13/2023

THERE'S A SURVEY ON DARKTIDE'S LAUNCHER - GO FILL IT OUT SO FATSHARK FIXES THEIR GAME.

1/16/2023

The survey is gone, lmao? :D

Also added rant about chainweapon desync.

1/17/2023

Shoutout to Azrael in the comments, CM on the discord finally said something:
https://forums.fatsharkgames.com/t/it-speaks/73439

1/21/2023

Added a community section because people bring up a good point about toxicity and the lack of multiplayer features that previous games had.

Added a Fatshark section, because Fatshark needs to learn a lesson about abusing their consumers.

Added a link to another great forum post that everyone should check out, a mad lad actually went and dug up.

Also added Silver's comment from the forum (which looks like it got deleted) because it's pretty messed up if true and still worth bringing to attention. Be mindful of the disclaimer before it.

1/22/2023

Totally thought this post got deleted this morning and made a new post lamenting its demise, which was clearly a false alarm.

Phew was sweating bullets there for a minute.

Also worth noting though is my group is probably done with this game. Last time people played it was pretty miserable, everyone just laments the things they hate about the game, and then we go into a level and get blind sided by some broken or frustrating element...
So until something major changes, that's roughly 7 active players who have moved on to greener pastures.

Plus, gotta get that diving helmet in DRG. That thing looks sick.

1/24/2023

Open Letter from Fatshark:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FnQmgOEXgAQwwqO.jpg

A bit more context from the CMs on the Discord:
- There will be a patch this week to fix some of the more disruptive bugs and crashes.
- Crafting is completely on hold because they are completely redesigning the progression system and how you obtain gear. It sucks, but those are systems that definitely need to be redesigned.

Overall, this is a pretty good step forward, albeit the criticisms that this was slow, that this was generic, and that this is just restating what has already been said by CMs (but officially) are all valid. For now though the ball is in Fatshark's court, and they have promised change is coming... And we will be here to judge them and, if found wanting, hold them accountable.

Also, the CMs are just mouth pieces for the company, often ones that are put out there to take punches. They're doing the best they can with what little they have, in the terrible situation they are in - try to be respectful and patient with them.

1/25/2023

Patch notes!
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1361210/view/3648513424275320496

Overall kind of a mixed bag, excited to see suppression being addressed but not excited to see bulwark get buffed... Also a bit disappointed by the feats section, found it a bit lack luster.

First impressions after doing a few missions is this was a good patch. Immediately noticed the suppression changes, immediately noticed quality of life changes for the hellbore and the chainsword... Connection felt smoother but that might have just been time of day (less people on when we played).

Overall, a step very much in the right direction imo.

2/07/2023

New patch, excited for the psyker warp charge changes. Hopefully they're more viable. Also excited to see that ogryn weapons were adjusted, though confused why they were nerfed.

Side note - player numbers continue to drop, though they've mostly stabalized around a peak of 7k per week. Game definitely feels like it is on life support though, and hopefully Fatshark can turn it around before the numbers get too low.

Also, plans to go through and clean up this post to be more readable and start crossing out things that Fatshark addresses or fixes.

See Top.

UPDATE [7/5]
Since people necro'd this, and we've all been cursed with its resurrection, I'll at least go through and make the effort of updating my notes (and actually formatting them like I promised 5 months ago - woops).

Some immediate take aways:
New weapons are awesome, and very fun.
New game modes are underwhelming, some are just downright bad/tedious imo - looking at the more specialists mode in particular.
We still desperately need new characters/subclasses.

I mean, you're free to speak for yourself, but personally I don't have any major issues with the game. Do I think it is the greatest game ever, no, but I also don't think it's as bad as you're making it out to be either. It's a decent game.

Except he is being mellow dramatic.. Also he is assuming everyone thinks the way he does. He could've also presented his disappointment with the game in a more.. idk.. professional tone, but it really just sounds like mellow dramatic whining.

OP point is the game would be great, except Fatshark put a bunch of trash "systems" in so they could pad it out, thus making the game merely decent. Have you considered that you might be part of the problem?

I don't find the game as bad as people say but it definitely has issues.

What I find absolutely hilarious is the Dan Abnett fairy tale. Can ANYONE tell me what his contribution is here?

Did they really need a writer to tell them how to do this non-existent storyline?

I can see one of two things happening here:

A) There is an actual story here but they didn't manage to complete the end-game part of Darktide, so they ripped out the whole thing and left just the 'yay, you are now part of the Inquisition instead of a worthless reject" part which even a 12-year old could think as a storyline.

They are going to gradually add the actual storyline parts later, calling it free content and/or paid DLC, along with boss levels (remember those? We had 4 boss levels in Vermintide, now we have 1 (with 2 variations).
Maybe a Skittergate (ending level) kind of mission too?

OR

B) The whole Dan Abnett thing was simply a consultation about names, places and general hive city info and nothing more. Then they simply promo-ed the heck out of it and made it sound like an epic story was going to be included in the game.

OP point is the game would be great, except Fatshark put a bunch of trash "systems" in so they could pad it out, thus making the game merely decent. Have you considered that you might be part of the problem?

*Eyeroll* The classic "Maybe YOU are the problem." Argument. Yes, because I made the game and encourage them to put in 'trash' systems. Totally, 100% I am the problem, I developed the game, I made it have a Store in it, I made the crashes happen intentionally, yes. 100% my fault. Give me a break...

I could agree with some of his points if he didn't come across as a whining brat. "Woe is me, the endtimes are upon us! Gaming is dead!" is literally what I get from this. If he took a more professional tone I could agree with some of his gripes, that some changes do need to happen, but crying that fatshark and the game as a whole is dead and sucks.. well.. its very disingenuous.

Yup, I'm at 100 hours myself. 2 level 30s. Leveling up a zealot now and runnng a few missions on my Vet and Psyker to build up mats for future crafting and change the pace.

Looking forewad to a fully implemented crafting system and more content, but if I full quit right now I got my money's worth too.
