Bolters are good for most damage in shortest amount of time as possible
Infantry autoguns are a nice compromise between the 2
Toughness on elite kill
Regen Grenades
Elite kills regen grenades
75% less ranged damage taken on ult
Reload 30% faster after elite kill
Regain 60% toughness and reload immediately
Then the gun itself has high Stopping power, mobility, damage, and ammo. Haven't been able to find the holy grail of the Mk 8 Autogun, but the build and the gun lets you 'No Russian' through everything that doesn't wear Carapace armor. Also has a +25% vs Unyielding, which helps alot vs Reapers, Bulwarks when you slip behind them, and things with Healthbars like Assassination targets, Slug of Nurgle, SpookyHost, and Plague Ogryn.
For those dudes with Carapace armor, I run a Shovel with high defense and mobility. Dodging all over the place, shoving hordes down on their asses so Zealot and others can clobber 'em good and so I can save ammo. Special attack on shovel staggers like a sonnova B, so that's fun vs Crushers.
Can deal with snipers and longer range units if you just tap the fire button. Almost never brace the damn thing either, too busy running through groups of shooters and needing more ammo, lol.
Inbetween stuff I'm usually tossing grenades like rice at a wedding because I've always got at least 2 or so on me. Great for staggering big bastards and hordes, and for clonking snipers in the head across the map.
I've also got something around +45% block efficiency across my Shovel and curios, so those help for picking up guys who get downed, along with a +3 Stamina curio.
they're a very flexible class that can mix and match so many weapon combos while providing good killing support on the field, so it's all a matter of your personal preference.
lasguns has multiple types that can benefit multiple playstyles ranging from crowd control to sniping. although it has fully automatic variants, I feel like lasguns excel more in the sniper category.
autoguns are the same except the automatic variants are better with crowd control than lasguns overall, although you may like some of the semi auto variants for sniping/single target purposes.
then there's misc guns that are multi purpose like the lawbringer shotgun, shredder auto pistol, revolver, bolter, and plasma gun.
also you can tell what guns are semi auto/full auto/burst by looking at the little bullets under the damage numbers in the weapon card. thankfully they added that feature in.
Kantreal Mkll Lasgun is just good. Good accuracy on sights, moderate RoF, higher damage shots.
Like others in this thread, I'm running autogun, Agripinaa Mklll Braced Autogun. Really good vs Flak Armor, penetrates enemies up to a mass of 2 or so, so it tears through hordes. Really easy to run and gun anything that shows up in your face or out in front of you. Lacks accuracy at longer ranges, but can do the job.
None of the above can really deal with Carapace armor, so Lucius Hellbore is a good middle that can serve as anti-armor on it's charge shots. The Mkll felt the best for me, highest rate of fire, highest damaging uncharged shots, lowest damage charge shots, so really just gives you a moderate way to deal with armor at a distance.
Bolter is another of those weapons that is only kept in check by it's long switch and reload time and small mag. Deletes anything you point it at. Good for just about everything, but you may want a strong melee to keep your ammo from running dry.
Plasma I haven't played with much. Seems very strong at range and is an armor killer. You can blow yourself up using it, and it overheats quickly, so it's another case of a very strong situational weapon.
all guns have different uses honestly
recon lasgun is very strong at some things if you get an infernus blessing, but it does poor damage vs. maniacs which means you struggle to kill ragers or most specials, and it does zero damage against crushers
bolters are good at flattening the ogryn elites, especially the super obnoxious bulwark that will block hits on anything standing near it with its grossly oversized shield hitbox, but they are slow to kill off an enemy ranged squad which I consider a huge drawback; as veteran your biggest strength is keeping your team safe from ranged enemies and bolter is mediocre in those situations
XII lasguns are good at picking off specials because of the very large bonus damage they do to maniac enemies at long range, and are also good at killing ranged squads, but require a bit of distance to get full effect from which is not always possible when you have to stay within X meters of your teammates at all times
autoguns are... not a single type of gun. i think people are not being specific when they say this, because there are 3 types of autoguns and only 1 is worth using.
infantry autoguns are meh because they have too much ADS recoil, too much hipfire spread, and limited ammo capacity for how many rounds it takes to drop something
headhunter autoguns were SUPPOSED to get a huge buff to damage and reduced recoil, but apparently the patch only changed the recoil and they still do laughably low damage
braced autoguns are incredibly strong and the "aggripina MK VIII braced autogun" is what I would recommend to anyone looking for an all-around gun that works in most situations. It can kill most ranged enemies in one headshot with the right perks, it has innate suppression that automatically makes ranged enemies run away when you shoot at them (you don't even need to hit them!) instead of focus firing you, and it is very accurate when fired in bursts using hipfire mode, even while moving, which makes it my go-to choice for situations where you will be on the move most of the time (ie any difficulty above malice).
Bolter eradicates entire groups of elites in close-to-mid range and is very precise on single ADS shots; however it takes forever to ready, has massive recoil that translates to very slow ROF if you want to fire single precise shots, and is pretty ammo hungry.
Plasma can one-tap anything in the game and pierce through a lot of cover. Pretty similar in use to a bolter but harder to fire precise shots at long ranges.
If you are looking for the best that is good for everything its the bolter. Get a high damage one and at level 30 with the insta reload perk its just best at most everything except long distance sniping.
Brown accatran with burn and salvo with +carapace or + unyielding is what you want
Other people run all reload feats and use Bolter. It's a viable strat, runs out of ammo and isn't as kind at long range. Doesn't kill as fast as Infantry XII in a lot of cases as well.
Braced Autogun is the horde-clearing / stagger ranged option. Not so great at long ranges which is a bit dangerous if your team can't clear them.
Recon Lasgun is the middle option between long range and horde clearing. Not as good at either one, but still decent.
Helbore, despite being buffed, is typically worse than Infantry XII other than the fact it can barely do some damage to Maulers and Carapace.
I'd go with Infantry XII, Bolter, or Recon Lasgun personally.
