No "crossplay" with gamepass?
I've got to be missing something, right? Friends that own the steam version wanted me to buy it to play with them. I figured I'd try it through game pass before buying, and it looks like there isn't a way to play with steam people? We're both on PC. Its not even true crossplay... Can someone point out what I'm missing?

No, you're not missing anything.

Gamepass connects with people via Xbox live, there's no crossover with Steam for this game.

Quick search found the answer for me:

https://www.theloadout.com/warhammer-darktide/crossplay

posted 6 days ago: Is Warhammer 40K Darktide crossplay or crossplatform?

Warhammer 40K Darktide does not have any kind of crossplay or crossplatform support. In a post from Fatshark, the developer said, “at this time, we are unable to comment on when or if crossplay and cross-save will be available.”

EDIT: https://www.pcgamer.com/warhammer-40k-darktide-crossplay-pc-game-pass-xbox/

This is from 8 days ago: "We see the value in cross-play and cross-save and fully intend to support cross-play shortly after launch," Fatshark says. "Cross-save is more complex to execute and still being investigated."

Sounds like typical FS double speak to me. But it's definitely not in now.

Good. I had the pleasure of experiencing crossplay in Aliens: Fireteam Elite and all it lead to was laggy team mates, long server sync times and people who had no idea what they were doing.

I'd rather play with Steambros if given the choice.

Thats.... absurd... Also I think this is the first time that I've heard of PCs playing with PCs called crossplay. Its been a basic feature in computer games since multiplayer became a thing... I saw the articles but thought that I must have been misreading it. I really don't get how people aren't more upset over that than crafting. Making it so that people can't play with their friends isnt how you expand your player base...

Anyways, thanks for clarifying it for me.

I have 3 friends with PC Game Pass and I can't play with them. Spent hours trying to figure out why we couldn't see each others' games and linking XBox Live PC accounts with Steam accounts and got nowhere. Why silo two different groups of PC players based on retailer?

I assume it's because FS hasn't set up their servers to handle both systems' achievement/social media/payment systems in a universal way for both sides, because crossplay was viewed as a low priority compared to getting minimum viable product onto the management/publisher-decided launch date after a one year delay making investors/management/Games Workshop very unhappy with not making money for a year.

Gamepass, Epic and Steam are all segregated.

Every time Darktide makes a patch, Microsoft has to sign off on it ( that's why Gamepass was 2 patches behind Steam ).

People on the Gamepass version had the twitch reflexes of a coma patient.

It's a version parity thing. They have to wait for Xbox to approve all patches etc.

So why is it that no other game has this issue of waiting for Microsoft to approve patches for multiplayer to work? Even if the different patch versions will be out of sync for a few days at a time, they didn't even build in the functionality.

Just about every other game on there is steam compatible. I mean hell, my gamepass and steam accounts are linked even.

Also, I just don't buy version parity being an issue. Random matchmaking will throw gamepass players with steam players in the same match. I've had it happen before. Its literally apparently that they just didn't build the feature.

Its just absolutely nutty that a game on the same platform is being segregated by which retailer sold you the license. Imagine if Playstation players that bought a game at Walmart couldn't play with those that bought the game at Target lol.

I'd be playing this right now if it had cross play...
Big mistake to not add it tbh...

It was decided when Microsoft and Epic tried to enter the PC market directly by releasing their own markets/launchers. They tried to compete directly with steam but for what ever reason never bothered on improving their own launchers.

So Epic gives out free games to get people to use their malware age... launcher and then pays companies to make Epic Store only PC games.

And Microsoft tries to control every aspect a company has when releasing updates.

So instead of having smooth PC gaming we have 2 companies (Epic and Microsoft) trying to control every aspect of PC gaming so that they make all the money instead of being more consumer friendly like steam.

What are you talking about? Epic and Microsoft make it pretty easy to play with steam players in just about every other game. You can currently get into games with Epic/Game Pass players from steam with matchmaking. Its literally just that the devs don't allow you to invite friends that bought the game at different stores.

Yes because the hundreds of games that have crossplay, they're all laggy and have 'long sever sync times'

Quit talking out of your ass.

I mean it depends. Some games are more forgiving of crossplay than others (I don't recall any issues with Back 4 Blood other than the fact that I was playing Back 4 Blood) whereas crossplay has essentially ended at least one recent fighting game (Guilty Gear: Strive) as a viable online game due to poor implementation. Given Fatshark's track record I'd imagine they'd be closer to the latter than the former if they went crossplay with Darktide.
Only development teams that know what they are doing and know how to make a game can have cross play.
