Electric - Control
Lightning for the stun-lock (opens up tough targets),
Purgatus/Flame for the Stagger + Trash clear.
Flame offers quick and easy CC for minor specials such as Trappers, Bombers, Snipers, Gunners / Shotgunners etc. and are great when paired with a melee weapon to gap close and whack 'em down.
It is useless against Maulers, Ragers, Ogryn Elites etc. as they aren't staggered by it. I think Ragers are sometimes staggered by a sustained flame but that's it.
It's great also for stunning a horde of enemies, and is good for easy pickups and revives in the middle of a horde if another ally grabs a down person while you stun everything.
---
Surge staff is pure CC, but limited. It's not as quick or spammable, very expensive to cast, deals more (but still mediocre) damage against elites and specials. However, it can stun anything if charged (except monstrosities) and is great for stunning elites and specials for melee finishers.
You can easily solo two ragers / maulers etc. with a Surge staff. It also has more range than Purgatus.
While low level trauma staff is pretty bad, a good lategame one in the hands of a skilled player can actually do some work. Imo, outperforms the voidstrike staff at everything other than extreme range and peril buildup (the trauma staff does build a lot of peril). Ive been having fun with it.
with a good team that sticks together the lightning staff is useful, but if you need to protect yourself because your teamates leave you behind then the flamer staff. Flamer staff is underrated for single target damage - unlike the zealot flamer it isnt capped at 20 stacks, so you can get some insane DoT going on. I do find it a bit boring to use though.
Personally, despite its popularity, Im least fond of the voidstrike. I see guys blasting a couple mobs per shot if theyre lined up, while my trauma staff deletes groups or the lightning staff stunlocks everything big while killing the weaker stuff around it (which is helpful for melee chars so they can land hits on the big bad without wasting hits on trash mobs). It is peril efficient though, so I dont hate it.
