[LORE] - Is This Psyker Sanctioned?
I'm pretty sure that 40k lore states that *all* psykers in Imperial service are first rounded up and brought to Terra to be sanctioned by the Emperor Himself. Yet Darktide's psyker has lines saying he doesn't think the honor of visiting Terra would ever be open to him/his kind. Is he a rogue psyker?

Probably not sanctioned but inquisitors can pardon, train and sanction psykers if they deem it neccessary and the psyker is fitting all requirements. So that might be the path we're taking.

I'm fairly sure it's ambiguous in about the same way that the ogryn having a bonehead augmentation or not is

some voice lines and background options imply they were taken on the black ships at some point which would mean they had to be sanctioned or they would've been sacrificed for the astronomicon or handed over to the grey knights if they're powerful enough and young enough to recruit

at the same time, as you point out, there's some voice lines that also claim they've never been to terra or seen it which would mean they either weren't ever taken on the black ships or that they were somehow intercepted

I like the idea that Inquisitor Grendyl may be using unsanctioned psykers since it does add a lot of flavor, but given the situations we're dealing with in-game that seems unlikely. Plus Sanctioning isn't just a paperwork issue, it's a traumatizing physical/mental/spiritual process that can only be done by the Emperor and again, as far as I know, is required for all official psykers.

It seems unlikely that Fatshark would make a mistake in the lore like this, they're very good at lore detail, so there must be another explanation...
That comes as a dlc ... omg these lore nerds :-/

nope, you are no BLIND so you are not a sanctioned warp head.

The character creation options generally say no. The Inquisition has wide latitude to break the rules.

it's implied in a lot of the psyker's backstories that they were a sanctioned psyker prior to their imprisonment

Most psykers that inquisitors use are unsanctioned until they have time to go and get sanctioned, usually the inquisitor would rather use them until they have proven themselves worth getting sent to Terra. Either they die before that or they finish their mission and can get sent to get sanctioned, either way the problem is solved.

40k lore is very convoluted, and very purposely so. What might be considered "sacred, unbreakable law" in some places is merely...guidelines in others. Or flat-out untrue.

A psyker can also be sanctioned aboard The Black Ship, where they gather all found witches and psykers. The Black Ship is a massive slave ship full of psykers acting as a containment field for every single warp-attuned person in the Imperium, but it doesn't directly go to Holy Terra everytime it finds a Psyker - there are trillions of people in the Imperium, and millions of Psyker or more. The Ship travels around hundreds or thousands of worlds before making the return trip to Holy Terra to feed the Throne.

In many cases, Psykers with potential and whose loyalty to the Imperium is tested (Imagine extreme torture and brainwashing) will be sanctionned and tasked to capture and find other psykers for The Black Ship. The best of the best might even be recruited as Acolytes for the inquisition.

Because when the Enemy Within has Psykers... you're going to need Psykers to deal with them.

sanctioned 'just' means a psyker gets trained by the scholastica psykana and evaluated. that does not need to happen on terra.

You DO get sent to terra, though if you are too weak for 'real' duties but still valuable as an astropath: BIg E takes your eyes, but soulbinds you and protects you from warp ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ to a degree.
or you get sent to terra, if you are even too weak to become an astropath and subsequently fed to the throne, essentially.

I think the player psyker really just refers to the religious experience of a pilgrimage to terra.
