Nork wasn't a bone'ead, he wasn't chipped. he's a fully separate unit in the codex from the bullgryn bone'eads.

the ogryn we have are chipped. the chips are how the Emperium harvests the potential of all ogryn to be like Nork.

ogryn can count on these fingers

Smartest ogryn I read about was some female who became psyker. Other than that high ogryn intelligence means counting to 4 and able to give simple combat orders. Those ogryns are called boneheads and are ogryn squad leaders.
Honestly I kind of like the Ogryns being sort of intelligent and it really sounds more like they are speaking english as if it were a secondary or third language if anything, not that they are dumb at least in the game. Besides even if they are vastly larger and more muscular, I don't think scientifically speaking that automatically makes you dumber than someone skinnier than you.

I never said he was a bone'ead, which is why he was lengendary for ogryn standards.

but that's the distinction. we can count to 4 because we are chipped.

everyone here is making the mistake of confusing sentience with intelligence.

Ogryn sentient and self aware, and can make distinctions like "hey boss!" even without the chip. Our ogryn are aware enough to make small connections like "hey, that ship arrived on fire, what happened?"

we aren't smart at all. but we are self aware and sentient, and we have a literal brain implant to enable us to speak words of more than one syllable.

it's like gamers have no concept of nuance, everything needs to be extrememes.

I´d say Ogryns really arent that dumb, they´re more like cavemen and as Grim already wrote, their mind just focuses more on basic things like survival.
I mean think of it, if Ogryns would be really THIS dumb, then this had already lead to their extinction since no creature ever was literally too dumb to survive on its own.

these ogryn are the 1% super intelligent of the species if that is any indicator.

Ogryn are basically big dumb brutes, but they're very good at violence and very good at following orders making them perfect as shock troopers for the imperium. Basically you point at the enemy and set them off like wild dogs.

Granted, the ogryn you play as in the game actually seems to be what are termed Bone'eds, which are Ogryn that have undergone neural enhancement. This seems to be the case because the Ogryn can be seen In the dropship counting his fingers.

Comparatively to the actual lore, the Ogryn in this game are basically genius level compared to what they are actually supposed to be.

An Ogryn in 40k lore is basically unable to even load a gun. They can't take direct orders unless they are simple "Go over here" or "Stop and wait." And even those commands can be difficult. They also have a childlike disposition and get angry easily.

In the lore, if an Ogryn is capable of taking ANY direct order that even a two year old could achieve, they are given command of their own squad of Ogryn and given the title "Bone Head" because they are so "smart".

An Ogryn that is capable of counting to FOUR is considered brilliance level thinking by their standard. And they are often awarded fake medals in battle so as to encourage them to keep doing a good job.

Essentially, they are meant to get angry and get in the way of things, that's it. Beyond that they can't do anything. But we love them, they are precious and should be loved and protected.

Question for the lore enthusiasts. Would time in the Imperium cause them to smarten up as a species over time? As it's been said, they are only dumb because their brains were hardwired to survive in high gravity worlds where resources are scare. If the environment changes, would they not regain a more civilized view of things?

I mean to me personally I don't think living on a high gravity world even if resources are scarce would get to the point of making them this dumb, at most in my opinion they would be roughly the same intelligence as a Prehistoric human roughly and overtime the more they get exposed to civilization and are told about more stuff the less primitive they become.

Yes, that is how ogryn are.

The smartest of them are slightly above average steam forum user intelligence.
