Why are the ammo counts all wonky?
My lasgun has 71 capacity in the mag, but it takes 3 ammo for every shot. The heavy laspistol takes 2 ammo per shot IIRC. It's not like these are burst fire weapons that fire multiple shots per trigger pull, they're semi-auto weapons.

Any chance we could get weapons stats that actually reflect how many shots you're able to carry and fire before reloading without having to test them all yourself? At the least you could put some kind of UI indicator telling us how much ammo per trigger pull is used.

It seem very bizarre for sure.

only reason i can think of is that they want to confuse the player in to not knowing how much ammo they actually have, only a rough estimate

The ammo counter was made by an Ogryn

Had this problem yesterday. Tried completing a penance. "Kill 5 enemies with last round in the mag through a mission" but all the guns i tried used 2-3 rounds each time.

It could be based off the Pattern or Mark. I am currently using a blue quality Accatran Recon Lasgun that only uses 1 ammo per shot, but my purple Kantrael Infantry Lasgun uses 2.

There are lasgun traits that allow to consume less ammo per shot, whole thing about weapons is still unfinished and will be expanded later, but idea is Las weapons will consume 1-6 ammo based on traits, feats and modifiers.

As for why it consumes 2-3 ammo, because lasgun shoots energy out of a battery, you are consuming 3 bullets worth to fire a powerful enough beam to deal good damage, if you fired 1 you would barely hurt poxwalkers which is why lasguns are mocked as "flashlights", it takes quite some energy for it to blow limbs off.

Fatshark actively refuse to hire a UI/UX designer so we're going to be stuck with the lasgun ammo bollocks forever.

It would honestly be a lot more intuitive if the ammo use multipliers were just more shots per magazine instead of an arbitrary 1-6 "rounds". The end result will be exactly the same anyway.

I guess it all boils down to lore, as lasguns use standard charge packs (except some special cases). So how would you differentiate between laguns that has different energy consumption? The solution we have is crude, but your ammo counter shows charge, not bullets. That's more important for stuff like Lucius pattern that can charge shots, where you have uncharged shot, partly charged and fully charged, all consuming their own energy value.
P.S. Not to mention, even in case of autoguns, burst fire still shows you bullets, not number of bursts you can fire.

it not bothers me but personaly stats on inventory screen are 1/10 in usability

half of stats you have to guesswork how they work , others are not consistant as i had 2 las guns with exact same "ammo" stats , but one who had bigger , had less both total ammo , max ammo and used more ammo per shot , it was same type of gun too so ether bar lies to you or has wierd rounding

not to say when you compare you dont actualy see "what bigger" you have to eyeball it really hard

they should ditch the bars and give us raw numbers or have it as toggable opton as only way to check damage , ammo efficiency is have bunch of guns and go to shoting range

It would make just as much sense for it to quantify magazine "ammo" to whatever charge you have selected.

ie, it still would make more sense to have 1 shot = 1 "bullet".

If you're going to multiply or divide ammo based on charge, it would be much more intuitive to do so by just increasing/reducing the magazine/total capacity.

As for the Lucius, they could just have each charge use 1,2 or 3 "bullets" and it would make much more sense because you're actively charging it to use more.

I fully agree in that the weapon stats need a lot of work. Besides the fact that their meaning is often unclear, you can't compare the stats of 2 weapons in the game since there is no measure/scale/value on the bars and they are way to much apart to compare their "lenght" to each other.

I would suggest that Fatshark takes a look at other games like Deep Rock Galactic for some improvements, namely: an ingame "manual", where the basic gameplay elements are explained in a simple and easy to navigate menu.
something like:

- Combat -> Enemies/Beastiary
-> Armour
-> Damagae types
-> Weapon stats
- Stamina -> Sprinting/sliding
-> Blocking

You get the idea. The tutorial for example never mentions the Auspex, that you need to use for mission objectives, you have to fing out about it during the game, in the middle of an horde event. Can't even equip the auspex outside these events, so good lukc figuring that out ahead of time....

My theory is that lasguns fire 3 shots worth of ammo into one laser.
Which is fine, sure. But... With that in mind, why not just have 3 ammo show up as 1 shot, rather than 3?

...Then again, Fatshark have been bad with information and UI stuff for a long time.
