About the first two games...
Short answer: Yes, you need to play them.
Long answer: While it's not 100% necessary you really should.
I had several friends playing this game including 2 of them which never played the first two.
It was quite hard for them to understand several parts of the game because you learn a lot about the bad guys in the first games, a lot about the vampire lore of VD in general and a lot about the characters you're playing/facing as well.
Without that knowledge you probably going to have a bad time.
There is a lot to find.
But I'd say it takes around 15-20 hours to beat VD 1 and 50-60 hours to beat VD 2.
You can download them on the official website:

thanks for all the responses! I started playing the first one but ran into something where the screen just goes black and while it's clearly still playing, it won't let me get past. i had to do the same scene a few times and it wouldn't let me past. So now I'm just watching a let's play of it. Hopefully the second will be playable for me or I can find a summary video or something.
Can you tell me where and how that problem occurred? If it's a bug in the English translation, I would like to fix it.
