Resolution Fix without 3rd Party Software?
Are there any fixes for Widescreen Resolution without the execution of any 3rd party unofficial software?

Is there a way for me to tinker with the game files and make it work on 1440p resolution without running potentially malicious patches? Or at least an open source patch?

REASONS:
Patchers are constantly trying to infect PCs with their closed source crap.

I have downloaded Universal Widescreen Patcher from this link:
https://www.wsgf.org/article/universal-widescreen-uniws-patcher

I extracted two files off the package into Downloads, uniws.exe and patches.ini. Tested both on Virus Total, VirScan and Meta Defender. They all mark uniws.exe as malicious software.

On Virus Total, SecureAge APEX engine flagged the file as malicious. VirScan found Variant:Hupigon.Lyzo and PUA.Win.Adware.Slugin-6840354-0 inside, while Meta Defender detected Trojan/Killfiles!2CoVbl38.

I'm not risking it. There are usually easy fixes just by changing stuff in the game files, a simple reconfiguration solved many issues for older games for me in the past.

Is Universal Widescreen Patcher malware? (some antiviruses mark it as malicious)
Link I downloaded from: https://www.wsgf.org/article/universal-widescreen-uniws-patcher

Uploaded to 4 different websites, which use lots of different engines, providing multi scan analysis:

Virus Total: 1 out of 68 engines flags it as malicious, the engine being SecureAge APEX. Also doesn't have a good community score. The execution and PE resource parents are marked as dangerous.

VirScan: 2 out of 51 engines flag it as malicious. Arcabit detects Variant:Hupigon.Lyzo and Clamav detects PUA.Win.Adware.Slugin-6840354-0.

Meta Defender: Detects Trojan.

Hybrid Analysis: Provides previous scans of the exact same file which are either malicious or suspicious. Also detects Trojan and has a high threat score 65/100.

Use the fix that's available here instead:

I tested that as well and it seems equally malicious according to these sites. I also added another site to those 3, Hybrid Analysis, which found both malicious, gave them a high threat score.

Thanks for advice tho.

Hello Swofz_0, thanks for posting.

Although there exists other patches on the internet for enabling widescreen in the game, we generally don't advise downloading patches for our games from unknown unofficial websites to fix any issues with the game.

What I would advise instead if you are having any performance issue with the game, would be to lower the resolution and aspect ration in the game in case you are playing on a large monitor, if you are experiencing any stutters.

If the issue is that you experience black bars, you may also be able to edit the game's settings file as a workaround, which is located here -
SteamLibrary\Prince of Persia The Sands of Time\Hardware.ini

Please make a back up copy of this file elsewhere, before making any changes in case you need to restore the original settings file.

It's perfectly safe, don't be fooled by hokey "internet security websites" that report everything as malware. I've been using the posted fix for half a decade now, they are high quality and give you a 16:9 aspect ratio that's more accurate than that garbage HD Trilogy Ubi "remastered" for the PS3.

Says the one who is so eager to defend a third party unofficial software which potentially contains malicious software :D

Read Ubi-Milky's response, don't be an idiot.
I edited my comment so that it won't be offensive and puts the point in context.

As I've said: "I've been using the posted fixes for half a decade now, they are high quality and give you a 16:9 aspect ratio that's more accurate than that garbage HD Trilogy Ubi "remastered" for the PS3."

Also Ubi-Milky wants you to alter the aspect ratio without fanmade fixes which is simply not possible so he clearly has no idea what he's talking about. Anyway hopefully they'll cancel the misguided SoT remake and instead remaster the old games in high quality (the 2008 game included cause you know Ubi, you never released the DLC for PC).

Aaaanyway Ubi the Steam version of SoT has its fog broken by default, how about updating it from the GoG release that actually fixes this issue and restores the correct fog? Also how about giving a ♥♥♥♥ in general?

Sorry for the misunderstanding mate but your message obviously needed clarification since it was a tad bit offensive. I have encountered too many steam users who defend third party unofficial software like its their own for some reason, even though I'm not only giving scan results and my own suspicion as reason every time I ask for an alternative solution, I'm also not putting any allegations against these programs in the title. I suspected you were one of those.

By the way I bought the whole PoP franchise, are any of the games other than PoP 2008 also incomplete?

Is there any way you can guide me through that workaround? I've got an unedited Hardware.ini file backed up. Which part should I edit?

Not really if you don't count some negligable omissions like the classic 1989 game missing from SoT as an unlockable + the handheld versions of the sequels adding a few extra puzzle rooms.

The 2008 game is great though, just not on PC: on top of the missing content it also has a gaping memory leak in it that Ubi never fixed because it was the 2000s and 2000s Ubisoft was like "PC gamers? Pirates, all of them!" :D Also be on the lookout for your CPU affinity because on Windows 10 the game tends to load only one core resulting in frametime spikes / stutter.

Runs great on the RPCS3 PS3 emulator though if you're willing to look past your "3rd party software paranoia".

Sorry for bothering you but after this response of yours I searched the internet about version differences but couldn't find any significant information. May I ask one more thing?

My concern isn't about the portable versions, but rather the home console versions. Are the PC versions of sequels inferior to the home console ones?

No, not at all, for the SoT trilogy the PC ports are your best choice.

Can we get a patch or a official guide for this and other fixes for the game?
Ubi-Thrupney  [developer] Aug 7, 2021 @ 10:44am
Hi Mr Ardilla, thanks for asking about this!

Our not currently actively developing this title, but I'll certainly take on board your feedback that an official support guide would be helpful - that's very useful for us to know. I don't have anything I can share at the moment, but if we do create such a resource for this game in the future, we'll post about it here on the forums.

Thanks again for your feedback :steamhappy:
