projectM Music Visualizer

Unable to launch
I've been having a terrible time getting this to run. When launching, I initially get a radio button prompt to select whether to run ProjectM or a second, blank option. After choosing the first one, my Steam library briefly shows the program as launching, but then it simply returns to the usual launch button with no further response. The second option has similar results. I've tried opening the .exe directly as well, which similarly gets no reaction - no error messages or anything else appear.

This is happening to me now, too. I haven't tried to use it in a few months but I never had this issue previously.

The Steam version is quite old as of now, and has unfixed issues. In the upstream dev version, I've fixed most of the crash bugs plus other issues over the past two years.

The Steam app here is supplied by a community member though, even if it's titled "official". The core dev team currently has no access to the acount to push updates, not even to a beta channel. We'd like to see an updated release here, especially because the issues are frequently reported as bugs on GitHub while they're already fixed.

For the time being, I would recommend using the development pre-releases I've built, which come with a completely rewritten application and an improved projectM library.

You can get those releases for free on itch.io and GitHub:

The Linux version currently only runs on recent distributions (e.g. Ubuntu 22.x or Arch). The final release (or followup dev releases) will be more compatible though.

Thanks very much for the info! I had some trouble with it on Github but had no idea it was on itch.io. That's tremendously helpful.

fwiw, I couldn't get the pre-release to work with my not-newest Linux (my libraries are too old). Steam version installs but won't launch per what others report above. So I used the flatpack available in my distro's Software Manager and it works. Linux Mint 20.3 Una (base: Ubuntu 20.04), kernel 5.15.0-56 w/Cinnamon -- w/PulseAudio. The only issues are weird directory/file management (a QT thing I think) + comes with no presets -- but there's plenty in the pre-release pack. Glad to see this project evolving, available for free, and cross platform! Very cool software.
