too often i'm getting no action

I hit the N button or the R button upon a change in the music, and nothing shows up on the screen, just a blank void, sometimes a vague vibrating light, or a single line, but how can I guarantee with music that is always dynamic and full of sound, that the image that appears is also at least a little dynamic? I don't mind seeing a sedate or unmoving image, but no image at all seems like its not working like it should.

perhaps change the incoming audio source? I mean maybe you got the mic as the input instead of loop (as I have, works but Im just a beginner user)
