Just a heads Up for new player.
You finish the Main Story
( Play it through on HARD difficulty so you get used to it and wont have much issue with Bahamut Difficulty after it. )

You switch the difficulty to Chaos to be able to finish the Prologue Mission.

Bahamut Difficulty unlocks after the Prologue mission.

Switch to Bahamut To start doing DLC stuff and Unlock a CRAZY amount of new Build/Class/Job costumizations and different type of endgame grind stuff, Places, Missions and Continue the Main story in the DLCs.

-You can ONLY continue the Story and play the DLCs in Bahamut Difficulty

-If you start a mission on Bahamut you can start them and turn on "Extra Mode" it will give you a REALLY strong permanent Buff to make it Easier.

-"Extra Mode" Turns off Co-op

Good guide showing you an easy way to get through DLC and waste as little time as possible to get to new content. Don't bother grinding for anything until third DLC as the gear skips from the first two do it for you and the cap at the second one carries into the third.

So it's pretty safe to say to hold off on the season pass in case my group doesn't want to continue after the base game, since we can't access any DLC content until we at least beat the game once on Hard?

Yes that is correct, seen a lot of people burning out and deciding the game is just not for them after beating the base game or stopping near the end, definitely hold off if this is your first time.
