DLC and balance...
If I don't want to absolutely destroy the DLC, do I need to farm CHAOS gear or does having a lower level weapon counteract the Warrior of Light gear being 400 where the first DLC is about 200?

I'm currently in second DLC (Gilgamesh), and I feel its all about levelling the hell out of your character. If you don't have the top gear, and levelled the job class, then its too difficult. So don't be afraid of being too strong or something.

Also Warrior of Light second fight (once he's been enhanced by Bahamut) is pure destruction who mauls you in couple hits so better be prepared.

I might have miscommunicated, I mean I have the Lionheart Sword and the Warrior of Light set from finishing the game, where the sword is 120 and WoL armor is 400.

the WoL armor is ilvl 200. It's existance is mostly to help you quickly do the first DLC and gear up proper. It also serves for those who can't be assed to gear up and go in with Extra Mode and the WoL set equiped, as it will make you invincible due to having Knight 400% which makes you not take damage during Light/Chaos/||Dimension||Bringer, and since Extra mode gives you Permanent ChaosBringer, you won't die.

If you wanna get to the DLCs quickly, just equip the WoL armor and do some stages to get a 200 weapon+. After that point, do what you see fit.
Oh, it might have been the 400% affinity that really threw me off! So use the stuff from beating the game to get a current weapon or bring a weapon to ~200, then start DLC1 if I'm not interested in the postgame-to-DLC progression, got it. Thank you!

You'll want all of your gear to be as high ilvl as possible until you start doing rifts, once you do, ilevel will not be as important as actual affinities and stats, but you should start paying attention to affinities and getting the stats and bonuses you need.

How do you climb ilvls? We started DLC1 and I feel like we played all evening clearing main missions and barely got anything else 200+ ilvl.

As you face higher mission levels, you'll start to see the higher item level gear. (e.g., mission level 210 or 220 for example.)

But to note that item level will only take you so far and you'll need the stats to keep up past mission level 200.

Also a heads up if playing with a regular friend or two, to make sure all of you unlock the mission with its mission level. If you don't do this, only the host gets the first-time mission rewards. So if your friend(s) needed that mission for a limit release or to get credit, they won't be. (They can unlock the mission prior to joining you or if you make them the host after they unlock it.)

You increase the mission lvl.
The equipment you get from enemies seem to have a range of -/+ 10 of the mission lvl.

Dependant on your fighting skills you can jump safe intervals of 10 lvls or do big leaps and regear from scratch.

Always play on highest possible mission level you can do and that's pretty much it.
There is no reason at all to play at ilvl you are on, unless its 500 already.

Prioritize ilevel upgrade items over stat/affinity upgrades, you'll have to worry about affinities around ilevel 300.
