Lower difficulty to Story mode, blitz the boss, revert difficulty to what it was.
But if you have season pass, you'll be fighting him more often, so might as well learn.
Still, as I've said, just lower difficulty.
Anyway, how I did him, when I was bad player is knight.
Just pick a knight, boost holy damage/break as much as possible and let him kill himself on you.

You are correct with the max level of your gear being not much higher than what is available.
I think Lu2 may believe you are in a later part of the game.
Smithing or lowering the difficulty are the two biggest stat adjustments you can do at that point. Where the smithy hammers from those master tonberry quests would let you change the effects of your gear and upgrade them for a significant stat advantage.
And unfortunately with how the game was designed and how some of us played, the final boss became a giant roadblock instead of an opportunity to put everything we've learned to the test (mostly applying the opening tutorial and the tutorials in the first mission together). And also as a test to see what players could come up with if they had unlimited MP and break gauge.
