on 64-bit operating systems you need to have an active recording device to be able to launch the multiplayer. Sounds ridiculous but just find any mic or headset, plug it in and it'll let you play. if you don't have a mic you can also enable Stereo Mix.
Right click your Speakers symbol in the taskbar --> Recording Devices --> right click Stereo Mix --> Enable.

In case you wonder what Stereo Mix does. It creates a loop back that uses all sounds that go out through your speakers as input for a virtual microphone. in other words, selecting stereo mix as your microphone in skype or teamspeak will make other people hear your sound.
