Side note: I have not checked the DW2 forums, both Matrix Games & Steam, in a long time. If there was any kind of comparison of the 2 games in those forums, I'll respond to this thread again.

Distant Worlds 2 is a phenomenal game, although you must understand that it is certainly niche and different pretty much in any aspect than the Galactic Civilizations series.
Galactic Civilizations definitely is more "casual" in comparison, but not an absolute niche like Distant Worlds 2 which plenty of people would instantly dislike because of it's tough learning curve.
If you love Distant Worlds 2 for it's hardcore and complex design and cannot live without a game that you really have to first learn before you can enjoy it, anything along the lines of Galactic Civilizations probably isn't your best choice.
But if you're looking for a solid experience that can range from casual to quite the challenge, playing this game might be for you.
The only comparison you can come to a conclusion with would be "personal taste" really.
I only wouldn't recommend Galactic Civilizations to you if your preference isn't just playing a game, but more so living it and accumulating thousands of hours over years and years of focusing only on that specific game.

Gal civ games are more like MOO or civ games with slightly different mechanics
Played alot of Gal civ 1 & 2 were good games but still preferred the MOO games
Bought Gal civ 3 & DLC but did not have the time to play them again stelaris took most of my time ;)
Been looking at gal civ 4 for the last year decided to buy it when it was re released on steam
Sill it the scratching my head phase figuring out the systems and interface with do a review when I get more play time :P
If I want a space/sci-fi 4X almost tabletop-like experience in classic GalCiv flavor with some modern tweaks, GC4SN is where its at.
If I want more of a space simulation, something like DWU or Stardrive 1 with mods (which I still recommend), but more modern, then DW2 does it. A game where many things can be manual or automated, where the scope can get truly massive and intense.
Just depends on what you want, for me I've been enjoying GC4SN more lately, its easier to get into and has better pacing for feeling of progress. But I enjoy DW's combat so so so much more, that's one of GC's weak points IMHO, and always has been. But that's my perspective...if GC4 had an (optional) tactical combat layer, I probably wouldn't be posting right now because I'd be playing. I say optional because many GC fans don't want tactical or strategic layer combat that involves player interactions, so I realize I am the minority.
