can't pick things up

I was doing well. Then I died a few times and I've lost the ability to pick things up. I can't pick up rocks, or drills, or items like that (but I can still pick up resources and bring them to my ship.)

How do I regain the ability to pick up rocks? etc. There's not even an on-screen indicator that's it's possible to pick them up.

EDIT: I found the answer, just by fiddling around. I couldn't pick things up because my pockets were full. (All I had to do is press press L1 on the Steam Deck to rotate through my pockets and drop some stuff. Then I could pick things up again.) (Too bad I deleted my save for nothing, but at least I wasn't too far into the game...just an hour or so of progress lost.)

I j;ust deleted my save and started over. Now I can pick things up again.

once I figured it out, I loved it. Absolutely fantastic game.
