Can't unlock the doors

When i use the lock picks nothing happens.
A key lock should appear but i've got nothing.
Am i stupid or what?
Please help.

Since no one else thought it would be a good idea to SHARE how they solved the problem, I'm going to do that myself: hope this helps someone else coming here in the future.
To start picking the door you have to:
- press Ctrl to access inventory
- keep Ctrl pressed and left-click on the pick lock tool
- left-click on the locked door

I encountered the same problem because I'm playing on a Mac through VMware Fusion.
By default, all Mac OS's keyboard shortcuts are passed on to the guest. Because ctrl+click is a right click on a Mac, by default it would be interpreted as a right click on Windows too.
Because of this settings it is impossible to select an item in SC1.
To fix this, go to Fusion settings, then "Keyboard and mouse" tab, then in "Mouse shortcuts" deselect "Secondary button".
