Basic controls Question: How to drop and hang?

Seems like an obvious question. But if I want to drop off a ledge and hang from it, what do I do?
I was under the impression i just needed to walk of the ledge at a slow speed. But it feels 50/50 whether i'm going to swing around and grab the ledge, or just walk off the ledge and fall down. Is there something I should press to make myself grab the ledge?

Not all ledges are hang-able, on the odd chance have you tried backing up to a ledge to see if you can hang from it?

While experimenting save 1st.

Thank god I've spent the last year and half in a loop of walking off this ledge. Finally I can progress!
