I Don't Understand This Game
What am I missing?
This game feels incredibly inconsistent and it's infuriating, but is it my fault or what?

It's so hard to play this after playing the original Thief games because it feels so amateur in comparison, with its own rules seemingly bending at will. I feel as though I'm constantly getting caught for stuff that's either not my fault or for things I've managed to get away with in the past, or due to guards suddenly turning unpredictably and nonsensically, for Fisher not doing what I tell him to, and so on. It's constant frustration and it has my mind boggled as to how it was so highly praised when it feels infinitely more dated (it's linear as hell for one) than the genre pioneer released four years earlier that this game's influenced by.

I want to like it because I feel as though there's not enough stealth titles out there, but it's just constantly making me want to throw my controller against the wall. I'm up to the CIA mission and I don't know how much longer I can put up with this game's crap. The Oil Rig level prior was garbage, but the first two were borderline okay outside of their extreme linearity and inconsistent AI/movement.

if you're getting caught it's because you exposed Sam, by sight or sound. As for Sam not doing what you want that's an issue with you and the keyboard/mouse or game controller, e.g., your flaking/spazzing whatever devices your playing with.

I struggle with the keyboard/mouse because I never played it on anything but an OG X and IMO the mouse can't provide the finesse of the controllers analog tower.

Don't make the mistake of comparing the game to Thief, (never played it) but I've seen others compare it to the Metal gear games.

I was never able to get my win 10 game controller to 100% mirror the OG X controller, (with the PC version of the game) and as far as I've heard, (to date) SC1 doesn't have a controller program.

If you aren't willing to learn how to control Sam's movements maybe you should drop the game and find something else that doesn't require stealth

Lol. No need to be salty. Fisher handles like a moron. He's far smoother in Conviction and Blacklist (if me even mentioning these sequels invalidates my opinion to you, then that's your little elitist problem). I've also ghosted the original Thief trilogy as well as the original Deus Ex and Dishonored, so saying I should play something that doesn't require stealth is both ignorant and outright stupid considering how I'd already mentioned Thief. Sam's slow, sluggish, and doesn't do what I tell him to do a lot of the time. It's not awful, but he is a pain in the ass sometimes. Whether he wants to mantle something, or grab onto a ledge or fast rope is largely up to the game, and not me.

Go play the first two Thief games and see how woefully inferior this game is in comparison. It feels far less refined and open-ended, and slower and more restrictive, than said games, and they do literally everything better outside of graphics... which the third entry Thief: Deadly Shadows greatly improves upon Splinter Cell with.

I'm learning to accept the faults and am enjoying the game again now, but it's still a pain in the crack sometimes with inconsistent movement and AI, and a lack of audio feedback regarding movement. Its linearity is something that can't be fixed, either, and I can't help but draw comparisons to genre pioneer Thief because it just does everything worse. They are very different games, even outside of tone and feel, but the influence upon Splinter Cell is immediately evident, and so it's put in stark contrast.

Use quicksave a lot. That'll end your frustrations. The guards definitely don't turn around unpredictably.

Lenny you misunderstood, (I've never been one to use smiley faces and junk). I wasn't criticizing you, I was critiquing the possible issues you may have been experiencing relating to the keyboard/mouse PC version of the game. Regarding the OG X, I never had issue with controlling Sam's movement with stealth or running. As for the sneak aspect, my issue with the keyboard mouse is the scroll wheel itself, in many of the maneuvers in the SC1 PC version I had to resort to fast tapping "W" to get Sam to mini hop so as not to be heard. Never had to do that with the xbox controller, because of the sneak value I was able to avoid many unstealth like light kills.

I never played past SCDA, the company seemed to be walking away from the stealth aspect of the series and going for more image spectacular kill ratios

Thief or any of the other games you mention mean nothing to me, never played them, have played SC and haven't had your issues, so that's my elitist claim.

I don't know what fast rope means.
