Update: I ended up buying the game.
Question, doesn't the original work on the X1? Or are you buying the $2.95 offering because it has been remastered to play at the high res?
I can't agree more, for all but my SC games, (only stealth oriented I own) keyboard and mouse crush the controller. Nothing better for action shooters especially FPSs.
Yes many OG Xbox games work on Xbox One. All of them are also enhanced(looks like a remaster) up to 4K resolution on the Xbox One X and soon Xbox Series X.
I have the first Splinter Cell game on PC on Uplay but I just prefer using a controller with stealth oriented games. It just makes it easier and more intuitive to move your character with an analog stick on your gamepad rather than a keyboard.
Of course k/m is better for fps and other genres like strategy games but for stealth, platformers and racing games(although a wheel and pedal setup is better for realism) using a gamepad is preferable to a keyboard and mouse.
BTW other Splinter Cell games are also on sale right now for 75% off on Xbox including some that are not available on PC like Pandora Tomorrow and the OG Xbox version of Double Agent which is somewhat different from the Xbox 360 and PC versions.

I already have OG Xbox disc copies of Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory so I don't have to buy them again. Just insert the older disc on my Xbox One X to play them.
To right regarding stealth, although when I 1st bought HL2, (07-08) it was for the Xbox, (truly didn't know about PC version) till joined Steam. I had so much trouble controlling G Freeman I gave up at the beginning of Water Hazard because I was all over the place with the air boat. Although again, I had no issues playing the Halo games with the X. Later in 2016 joined Steam, found the HLs bought them and tried again with K/M and was lurvin it big time so I gave the X HL2 to youngest.
I have the 1st 4 SC games and for most part liked DA, my only issue was the departure from stealth, The KOs in Okhotsk alone total my KOs for the 1st 3 games combined. That and the ID bug in Elsworth Prison. I got 2 IDs minus any AI comment or alert tone no matter what I did. I even KO'd everyone from their 6 without AI comment or alert tone and still received 2 IDs.
Wifey is trying to talk kids into pooling cash for X1X xmas present this year, ( both already have one of their own) so maybe I'll get to play all of them again.
If you are looking for a console this X'mas that is probably the one to get as it is also back compatible for all previous Xbox consoles and will have HDR and doubled framerates for many prev gen titles.
The OG Xbox Splinter Cells looks good on the Xbox One X enhanced to 4K resolution but it will even be better on the Xbox Series X with HDR and increased fps added.
I would have bought the 360 just for the next SC game when it 1st came out but bailed, all I wanter was a more powerful game system, not a home entertainment center, we already had one and said system, (same one) is still shaking the house and part of the neighborhood.
I guess I'll have to wait see what the bugger is going to cost
Unfortunately at this time the Xbox One(unlike the Xbox 360) has a limited back compatible list for OG Xbox games(41 games) although apparently they will keep on adding to the list once the Xbox Series X comes out.
They have added so far the most popular ones including the Splinter Cell Series, KOTOR 1 and 2 and other Star Wars games, Morrowind, Ninja Gaiden Black, Prince of Persia Sands of Time, Psychonauts, Jade Empire, etc.
The nice thing about those BC games is that if you already have them on disc or in the digital library, you don't have to buy them again. Just insert the disc and the console will download the upgraded version that is enhanced to 4K resolution.
Microsoft also has this All Access program for the Xbox Series X where instead of paying in full, you can pay for it in installments of around $25 a month for up to 18 months without interest or downpayments after which you end up owning the console.
OG Xbox Halo 1&2, Oddworld 3&4 and Rainbow 6 not on the BC list but some of them were remade for the 360 and they're on the list.
Yup MS probably thought it is better to play the Halo remakes on both the Xbox 360 and Halo MCC on Xbox One so they didn't bother adding Halo 1 and 2 as well as the OG Xbox Fable to the Xbox One BC list.
They also have to ask permission from publishers/developers on adding games to the BC list, and sometimes that is not granted.
I can play the OG Xbox Rainbow Six 3 games on my Xbox 360(via BC) or PC(Uplay Gold version) btw.
A console version, entitled Rainbow Six 3, was developed for the Xbox, PlayStation 2, and Nintendo GameCube. This iteration of the game features the same basic engine, models, textures, and artwork as the PC version, but with significantly different game mechanics, gameplay, and storyline.
