Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas

Rainbow Six: Vegas won't start on Steam
I purchased and downloaded the game on Steam. I press play and an updater pops up, it then disappears. A little bit later the error message pops up saying "Failed to start game (app already running)"
I have tried the following already and didn't help:
1)
Reinstall the game

2)
Delete all of the files in this folder except:
- Steamapps and Userdata folders
- Steam.exe
- Restart Steam

3)
Rename the file R6Vegas_Game to R6Vegas_Launcher

All that and numerous times of restarting the computer and steam.

I messaged steam for support and they tell me to "make sure your network is optimized for Steam,' but this doesn't make sense to me because I run L4D2, Skyrim, Fallout 3, CS:GO all the time and I just check and I can still run those games, but can run Rainbow six: Vegas.....

no offence or anything but he mentioned that he couldnt so why bother trying to tell him the same stuff he already tried?
I'm in the same spot as he is an i hate seeing the same old stuff.

I recently got this game an it didn't work for me so i contacted support and i tried these 4 things in the same order (I HAVE WIN 8) make sure you follow all these steps to make sure it works properly.

1. Open up program files from my documents and then in program files find steam. Steam > Steam Apps > Common > Rainbow Six Vegas > Direct X then scroll down till you find DXSETUP. Run DXSETUP and make sure you install it.

2. Once you finished the installation go to steam application > Library > Games > Right-Click Rainbow Six > Properties > Local Files > VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE. Please wait while it finishes the update.

3. Open up program files from my documents and then in program files find steam. Steam > Steam Apps > Common > Rainbow Six Vegas > Binaries. You'll need to delete the launcher and change the name of R6Vegas_Game to R6Vegas_Launcher.

4. finally you will also need to check the windows updates. Go to Control Panel > search Windows Update > Windows Up date then install all those updates if you have installed everything then you maybe fine but it might ask you to restart. if it tells you to restart then please restart because it will mean that they are fully functional.

I hope you like this and if you have anymore problems then i will find another solution.

P.S. even though i said you will be fine if you have all win updates then you'll still need to restart.

I was having the same problem. I am running Windows 7 and this is what I did to have it work for me. You see that Steam icon shortcut on your desktop? Right click it, go to properties. Now go to compatibility tab. Under Privilege Level check (Run this program as an administrator). I suggest exiting Steam before you do this but might work without having to exit completly. Hope this helps not just you but a lot of gamers out there. I want some Rainbow Six casual gamer buds :D
ChinMediaHD's suggestions worked for me, fresh install of Win 8.1 and Steam. Thanks!

I am running Window 7 x64 and I have tried all of this and then some. I just bought the Rainbow Six Collection and the Splinter Cell Elite Edition and the only game that will run for me is Splinter Cell Double Agent. All the others will not launch :(

Too be honest. I managed to get it running by simply locating and running the 'R6Vegas_Launcher' and just made a shortcut for it. I didn't change the name. Just simply ran that.

Ditto for me.

Not sure if this is the problem for everyone, but my solution was also to make sure it was installed on my primary steam HD. Which, in my case is my E drive and *not* my system drive. I had steam install it on my C drive, though. Once I uninstalled it and reinstalled it to my E drive, it worked the first time. Without administrator options, moving dlls, playing it in compatibility mode, reinstalling DirectX, or renaming the R6Vegas_Game.exe.

I'm using Win 8.1 Pro.

This was the same solution to getting Ghost Recon to work

Sweet! I think we should have a fix for everyone then :)

So you have the Game and the Steam Client installed on C:\? Try these steps: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=6634-TLZC-9666 and/or these: https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5688-IFHZ-2170

Same for me. Couldn't get it to work until the primary steam HD and the HD where the game was installed were the same. Reinstalled it and it works fine now (Win7 64)

The only solution I found was by running this executable (create a shortcut): SteamApps/common/Rainbow Six Vegas/Detection/detectionui_r
