Obtaining emeralds?

Didn't see anything purchaseable in the slayer souls area. Is there an equipment milestone or something I need to hit to start obtaining emeralds? I've got a quest for it (which also results in more emerald drop chance... but yeah... kinda odd I see that before the OG source of them)
