Bonus Stage 2 Shadow Creature

Someone please explain. What is the Shadow Thing you can touch in Bonus Stage 2's second run? It's sitting on top of the u/v/mustache-shaped tunnel section. I wall-jumped up there, bumped into it, got a screech and then the music cut out. I noticed nothing else past that.
Is it a collect-them-all thing with one hiding in each bonus stage?

its just in stage 2 and it unlocks different start menu screens and musics when u run the game
