Will It run on Windows 7-64bit
I know some older games don't run on 64 bit systems, just wondering.

It runs on Windows 8 64bit :).
thanks :)
In almost all cases with older games that won't run on a 64-bit OS, it's because of the disc-based DRM. Fortunately, most everything on Steam has had that old 32-bit-only DRM stripped away since there's no longer a disc involved.

Absolutely, that's why the retail version doesn't work. The disc version of Far Cry used SecuROM, circa 2004. Nowadays SecuROM is just a tool to limit the number of simultaneous activations, but back then it was used to verify that your CD/DVD was an original factory-pressed disc rather than a copy. To do this, they had to install a device driver sandwiched between your normal optical driver and the optical drive, which allowed them to check for certain unreproducible sectors on the disc. All drivers on a 64-bit system MUST be 64-bit, but those old SecuROM drivers are 32-bit. So, no go. You can usually get the retail copy of old games to work if you can find a tool to strip out the old DRM. Personally, I'd rather just spend the few bucks to get the DRM-free version on Steam. You can always gift the retail copy to a friend that is still running XP.

Of course, the other solution is to set up a dual-boot system with both Windows 7 x64 and Windows XP x86. That way you can just reboot into XP when you want to run those older games that just don't want to work with a current OS.

I was just about to make this thread. Last year or so I tried getting this steam version to work with the 64-bit high-res texture patch, or whatever it was that the company offered, and it refused to go past the the loading screen and would freeze.

After a couple days I quit fussing with it. Anyone try using that patch?

Okay it's just that on the steam store page it says that it can only be played on win 2000 and Xp, so my quesion is now if anyone have experienced problems with a steam copy of far cry or if anyone knows if it has been patched to work on win 7?

The reason it says 2000/XP is because those were the only current operating systems in 2004 when the game was released. It doesn't mean that it won't work on a newer OS...Steam just lists what the manufacturer originally listed as the supported operating systems.

It does work with Win 7, either 32-bit or 64-bit. I guess you could say that it has been patched to work with Windows 7 x64, because they had to remove the old copy protection. That's why the retail version won't work.

There have been a few people commenting in another thread here that they just get a black screen on startup in Win 7, and the fix is to turn down the graphics setting from ultra to high (or possibly just turning the "lighting quality" down to high). I suspect that has more to do with their graphics card than Windows 7, but the original post mentioned Windows 7.
I was asking because I have bought older games on steam that haven't worked on a 64-bit os
Works here on Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit but i do have to mention that the game sometimes stutters. I have a Core i5 3570k @ 4.3GHz and a GTX 660 TI and every game i have plays at 60 fps full graphics with no stuttering. But it does run good most of the times, so i'd say enjoy it, it's a realy good game!
Just played me some Far Cry 1 last night on: WIndows 7 64-bit Home
Runs great vanilla style; without any 3rd party patches, etc....

Bourght it on steam the other day and it works fine on Windows 7 home premium 64 bit
I got windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, Gateway FX P-7805U, P8400 intel 2.26ghz, NVIDIA Geforce 9800M GTS. I got all the settings on ultra with full screen mode and haven't had but one crash with it. Everything else works fine on it.
Win 7 pro 64bit, I7, radeon 5870, Far Cry does not work for me, gets the main menu but hangs up trying to load the first level. No mods, pure steam version. Gave up on it after a while.
Mind_Expander - how long did you wait for the game to load? The initial level loads can be really long for some people.
