Far Cry

Far Cry

Far Cry 1 Stealth doesn't work?
I've had the first game for quite some time now, but it's always run like crap for whatever reason, probably because of being on a 64bit OS. Anyway, I finally got it running at an acceptable level, and was trying to stealth my way through the first section right after the tutorial segment in the tunnel. Unfortunately this isn't working.

Right as soon as I step out of the tunnel mouth onto the hilltop above the cluster of huts, the guys down at the bottom almost always spot me. On the off chance I can sneak my way down the hill, it doesn't seem to matter how dense the jungle gets, they can always hear me or see me, even when I lay prone. Hiding behind trees, inside large bushes, on the other side of the huts....it doesn't seem to matter at all. The NPCs have freaking x-ray vision and the amazing ability to find me no matter how I hide.

Is this because the game is so old? Or am I approaching stealth incorrectly in this? Because I distinctly remember when the game came out that one of the big selling points was that you could hide in the jungle and ambush the enemy, and essentially approach things however you want.

I thought the same thing as you. I had it on moderate and some how the enemies were seeing me through walls and the like. I at first chalked it up to mis-remembering ("Maybe it was always this hard... it was 2004). Then I got to the merc camp in "Pier" and it became clear that there was a bug with the textures allowing the AI to see through walls.

I did a quick Google and it would seem that when Crytek last updated this game to fix a few bugs, they caused some textures to be see-through in single player. Since Steam is providing the latest official update, we get to enjoy this bug.

However, if you (like me) don't appreciate the added challenge this bug brings, you are able to fix it in one of two ways:

- If you want to keep it vanilla, install the "un-official" 1.41 patch from here: http://farcry.filefront.com/file/Unofficial_Patch_141;78338

- If you want some additional bug fixes, install the fan mod "FCAM" from here: http://www.moddb.com/mods/farcry-addon-mod-fcam

I installed FCAM myself and it seems to fix it. To install it you will need to create a "Mods" folder in your /Steam/SteamApps/common/FarCry folder and extract the files there. Then you can use the icon on the desktop, or start up the game from Steam, go to "Mods" on the menu screen, and activate it there.

If you do use FCAM, two notes so far: Create a new profile (the "default" one can have issues with checkpoints) and the game will most likely crash when you blow up the fort. To get to the next level, use console (~) and type ' \map pier ' (no quotes). It resets your weapons, but at least you can continue.

Good luck!

Wow, that is a strange bug. I wonder why Crytek never bothered to patch it up. Regardless, thank you for the info. Currently downloading that mod as I type this. Crossing my fingers that it will work. Now, if only I could have shadows on very high without frame rate issues, I'd be set.
