Ys VIII has the greatest content in terms of amount and length to explore - number of unique monsters, bigger map exploration despite being separated into smaller areas, and yes more impressive scenery, extra dungeons and lots of raid/hunt scenario to stand against, not to mention colorful and vibrant textures. Therefore its asset size reaches 22gbs, and close to 30gbs if using HD texture pack, and for the story one playthrough can be ~75hrs (if you are fast player) and ~100hrs (if you like sipping tea and checking things carefully).

Ys IX on the other hand is a cutback from VIII, however, still longer compared to previous Ys games before VIII such as SEVEN, Memories of Celceta, Ys Origin. The reasons behind the 10 gbs size are - thanks to the location of the game that is about a Prison City, whose main tone and theme of monotone gray, that uses much fewer textures (I mean mainly gray walls and bricks so they saved a ton), then number of enemies got reduced, but they do receive a bit of depth in return, also no bonus dungeons like VIII. As a result, IX should and will seems less impressive than VIII for you, but does that mean it is a bad game? Not at all. The story is still complete with a clear conclusion, and I believe devs did a good job for leading you around the City to avoid feeling bored, repetitive much, so don't skip sidequests. Another thing is that you have great fun characters to lead the story, and the pacing is tighter, thus for some people they prefer this over VIII that can be too slow for them. And boss fights do have fresh gimmick to figure out. In overall, one playthrough of Ys IX should be around 30(fast)-50hrs(careful), comparable to VIII version on VITA, but once again, it is just VIII special treatment in terms of additional content is too great.

That being said, if you are unsure and not a fan of the series, just wait for sale is the answer, because clearly Ys VIII with discount is the best choice so far, and here you pay higher but receive much less.

It's a little shorter but I somehow spent more time in Ys IX than VIII, probably due to playing Lunatic directly.

As for the size... Much of the game takes place in the city area which is one big map. There are fewer maps overall than VIII. Also the core of Ys IX is its lore while the core of Ys VIII is exploration, text is smaller than graphics. Who knows!

File size has little to do with content and game length. I see people make this mistake all the time. Ys IX should take between 40 and 50 hours to reach 100% completion depending on difficulty. Ys VIII took me around 60 on Nightmare for comparison. I would say IX is one of the worst games in the series, though. Not as bad as Celceta, but in the bottom 3 for sure.
