How to actually trade?
I'm used to Caesar/Zeus/Emperor, where all you had to do was open a trade route and build a trading post for the city you want to trade with.
But in this game there's either no trade post bulding or I just can't find it in the building UI.

So how do you actually trade in this game? Because i've just got a load of Papyrus sitting in storage collecting dust.

For land routes => Storage yards works as trading posts.
For water routes => Dock is you go to buildning.

Land route traders will simply visit one or more of your storage yards to buy the goods they need (that you have made available via the "Trade Overseer" in the left hand menu).

Pharaoh uses the same principle of a standard dock as that of Caesar III. I figure, from your reference, that you mean Caesar IV, which uses the same city trading docks as Zeus and Emperor.

The differentials are a bizarre lady buys food from a granary or a storage yard and everything else from storage yards. Another bizarre lady then goes around distributing what you instruct the bizarre to buy.

The dock, which you will find in the distribution section of the control panel, is a huge improvement on the original of the game. It lets you set what the dock can trade. In that sense, you could, if you so wish, assign a dock to each sea trader, however, that would be a mistake.

Trade isn't introduced until Mission 5 and even then it is by land and imports only. Sea trade doesn't happen until the two level 7 missions Behdet & Abedju.

I figured that out eventually. Took me embarrassingly longer time to than it should have. Still haven't quite figured out whether to set to "Export surplus" or "Export when over [x]", though. Although, I have heard that trading was a bit buggy and I don't know if it still is or not.

Don't you just love it when the authors of posts either don't return to see if there is a helpful answer, or don't say thank you for the help!
Well, thanks for reminding me that I made this topic.

Never use "export surpluses" or "import as needed" options, unless you want additional problems. In the original Pharaoh those options were reliable, in Pharaoh A New Era not anymore. They might work somewhat in case of some resources, in other cases the game won't estimate anything, so you'll find out after 5 years that you haven't exported or imported anything of a resource.
Stick to using numbers everytime, import to maintain X or export when over X, and one less headache to worry about.
