Its non-existent. You send your armies and get either Victory or Loss screen. Recently they made changes that if you lose a battle a few random buildings in the city are destroyed

The worst decision was to remove this part. It added a challenge that has essentially become the most boring part of the game. Why would you choose the fighting city option now? Why would you build walls to fortify a city? They don't matter. I once beat a Pharaoh coming to wipe me out simply by removing the bridges to the city...what fun that was in terms of challenging me strategically. This is BORING AS!!!!

Massively disappointed in the removal of battles. I will not let this go, massively disappointing. I don't feel the devs really respected the orig game tbh.

I came in here after months to see if combat had been fixed. I played the old one and can't play this one. It's ludicrous that a military superpower like ancient Egypt is presented this way. I spent an afternoon trying to get the old game, off CDs, to load and work in 64-bit Win 10, but gave up.

I have Caesar and Zeus on CDs too. If this team updates them I will not be a buyer. Some of my favorite games of all time, but no.

Yikes, they still haven't added combat? Guess this is what happens when you give IP to the lowest bidder

I was on the fence about combat being removed but one thing that really sucked about the old Pharaoh was nonsensical invasion points with absolutely no hint or warning and the first invasion comes 10-20 years into the map, and of course you built your city there so going back in time even if you savescummed wouldn't help, so this means you have to restart and that's 2 hours lost. So I understand why they did this and I think it's a positive change, but an option to either have battles or just see where invasion points are would be fine.

There were also a couple maps where the enemy army would spawn across a river and you'd just sit there for like 6 in-game months waiting for them to go away.

Also, transport ships were absolutely garbage in how you had to click like 30 times for them to finally pick up your army, the jank there was unreal. Maps in the old game that involved having to shuffle armies across multiple places was just terrible.

Also, there were way too many missions on Very Hard where even with a full fleet of warships, you'd have to spend almost 15 minutes microing (basically slowly dancing them back) to use their ranged attack or else winning the map was just not possible.

Removing battles fixed those three problems for sure.

what they did replace it with doesnt really work properly and is glitched. you can never tell what is going on during the battles or even who is going to win. you only can go by the end result which is given. theres no flavor or depth or strategy to it at all

you can still buy the original on steam with the cleo DLC for cheap and theres mods to improve the game and to make it work quite well on modern computers

Probably too late to be seen, but I did download the Steam version after I failed with the CDs. I'm very conversant with mods, and I built my own PC. Sadly, in the two hours I had before I couldn't refund it, I could not get the mods to act any differently than the CD version. Perhaps because I have an AMD GPU and not nVidia, but I couldn't get anything approaching full-screen in any rez. I tried every Windows compatibility mode all the way back to Win98 and up to Win7. I also had very severe game speed issues I couldn't avoid. I refunded the game. It was my first Steam refund ever, in about 15 years and scores of games.
