Granary Vs Storage Yard?!?
So here is a question I had in mind since the first time I started to use storage yards:
Is there REALLY a reason to have granaries?!?

So far I only found ONE point where granaries are actually OF USE in comparison - that is to calculate the total "Food Stocks for the Chief Overseer"!!!
Only there it is mentioned how much food is stored for how many months and for SOME reason the storage yards are NOT in that calculation! Obviously having no food stored/mentioned here gives you a bad overall city rating.
But it makes honestly no sense because food in this game needs no special storage, so why would you ignore TONS of imported grain just because it is not stored in the granary??? Besides the obivous fact that imported food can ONLY be stored in storage yards...
Bug? Design decision?

So I started an honest COMPARISON:
- Food is stored in both buildings.
- Atm same maximum of 3200 for food. (I could have sworn some weeks ago the amount was inly 3000 in the granary? Or did I remember wrong?)
- Both buildings need to be checked for fire and collapse risk.
- The bazaar takes food from both sources and only prioritises the distance - the closer the better!
- BUT the storage yard only takes 3x3 space whereas the granary takes 4x4!
- AND one granary costs 250(!!!) debens compared to 70 for the storage yard?!?
- AND the granary stores ONLY food!
- AND one granary takes 12 workers whereas the storage yard needs only 6?!?

Conclusion:
Besides the food storage rating for the chief overseer there is NO REASON WHATSOEVER to use a granary instead of a storage yard?!?
All I need to do is put down 2 (max 4) granaries close to the food production to fill them and then never bother about them ever again!
:/

So what do you guys think?
Doesn't this make the granary completely obsolete???

yeah, pretty much.

i just want to add, that storage yards and granaries are also both in the same worker category. So the reason to use graneries, as they're in the food category also isn't present anymore.

I don't know about The New Era, but in the original, in order for bazaars to take food from the Storage Yard, you had to be importing that food. The bazaars will take food from the Granary even if you aren't importing. This may have changed, in which case, you would be correct.

I just had a mission with fisheries.
I did definitely not import fish at all.
The bazaar took it from the storage yard right away, no issue.
The fish was first only brought to the storage yard and later (as soon as they were full) to the granary further away. So there is no difference (in this version) between the two.

In the old game I believe the bazaar only took food from a granary. Also I believe the granaries were higher priority for food, so until the granaries were full the storage yards would not get food. As it is the granary is a wasted building so I would expect them to make changes in the future.

The Granary is only needed for the first three campaign missions.
I would like the granary to start performing the same functions as in Old Pharaoh.

Some things on the plus side of granaries :
1.) They do not sell food, so you can build up a buffer
2.) They need more workers to figth unemployment

And to the storage size. Every warehouse and granary holds up to 3.200 pieces (400 per slot), with the exeption of bulky goods like stones, weapons etc. They are stored up to 32 pieces (4 per slot).
And this is, was, will ever be the same :)

in the old game the marketwoman didn't get food from the warehouses if you weren't buying it by comerce.

i haven't realized that now she can get it from warehouses without comerce. is it true?

I just hope the developers are NOT starting to add this condition.
In all honesty all they need to do is adding more storage space to the granary - problem solved.
It would make sense in this case because it is a specialised building and it has more room to store (4x4 tiles).
Going with strange conditions like "only take it from there if imported" makes it uselessly complicated afaik.

SO indeed there is something more. But also not a huge thing... :/
And fighting unemployment? With 250 deben per building?
Sadly its not usefull as 70$ PER building on the yard - thats with two using the same worker but half as costly. And I'm sure there are even better choices like 2x2 buildings. :(

While still playing OG, the player sooner or later asks this question.
I remember deciding that I was smarter than the developers and stopped building the Granaries.
Then some events happened and I realized that I was wrong, I didn’t do it again.

- the mood of immigration;
(when, according to the Councilor's calculations, there is not enough food in your city)
- Export of food;
(merchants can't buy food from the Granary, it's taboo)
- Fulfillment of requests for food;
(food in the Granary does not participate in requests, this is a taboo)
(this one is different in the remaster)

In general, the Granary is designed to guarantee the stability of your city's Food supply.

I confirm, is it true

In the OG there werde three ladies per bazaar: one distributes goods, one gets goods from the granary, one from the warehouse.
So by just using storage yards, one sister does not do anything, the other one has to get normal goods and food. That could slow everything down.

no, i don't want this condition be true, i only ask if it isn't so in this version.

thinking it was in this way i used to command the granary to obtain 1/4 of this kind of food i'm buying, so the marketwoman only has to go to the granary. but it's better this condition doesn't exist.
