Hello, I'm on the mission where the military is introduced. My only god is Seth and he constantly promises that he will help me in my next battle. Yet I never see it happening, in fact I was just defeated. Is this a bug or am I missing something?

Same, also the little detail that they completely gutted in game combat for an auto play mini battle you have no influence over. not a good move in my opinion, i miss the old combat and having to build a city around being attacked from different angles. also police and armies can no longer clear out hostile wildlife meaning i just get to sit and watch my citizens get eaten regularly.

You could be encountering a bug, but I can confirm that he will help you. He promised to help me in my next battle and then when I was attacked he defeated the enemies for me and I didn't have to go to battle at all.

you need to have a greater army than what is attacking you, and if you can greater defence. If you get beaten its because you weren't strong enough to take on their army.. Its a little lame i know, but it is what it is.. When you can, and I haven't seen it in my game yet, put down the Academy (near housing i hear its not really intergrated into the global employment yet and can cause issues) Infantry is stronger than archers so ideally you want a few infantry forts. one archers. and I always lay down 6 warships too when i can just in case it comes by water. Sorry OG player so, its kinda what i did then and it works for now too.

This looks like a bug to me. I've never seen anything that suggested that Seth kept his promise and helped me.
