Pharaoh 2 discussion
"Whaaat?"

So after seeing this well made remake being in the works and watching most of the videos on it, I wonder if people have the same thought:

Why are these guys using their talent to recreate something that exists and is well loved leading to criticism (positive and negative) for all the changes instead of having complete freedom to build a new game on top of the old one ?

I for one would have loved to see them pull off something like Nebuchadnezzar does.

Maybe the sales will elevate this Team to attempt a sequel, but as it is for pretty much all the remakers (except Crash Bandicoot which got a sequel to the old games basically 20 years later) they prolly just move on and we are sort of deprived out of a great city builder title (or sequel to Pharaoh) that's all new and would probably have given these devs something to be (more) proud of than just restoring something someone else made ages ago.

What's your opinion on this?

What about Lethis - Path of Progress? The game they did before.

Easy to say, but hard to do. The things that make Pharaoh a classic are hard to pin down. That's why a remake is such a great idea. Same great gameplay that actually works on a modern device, with updated graphics and modern QOL improvements. I hope it materializes.

Because the classic game could use a remaster.

As much as I love the OG game, it doesn't play perfectly on modern hardware. Even with community fixes, all of those games built on that same architecture have frame passing issues and whatnot. Like jerky animations that comes and goes. They also don't scale to much higher resolutions well at all, like 4K.

As well, Pharaoh is the most beloved but it also doesn't have some of the QOL changes made to the later games ether, which they are adding to this remaster.

Another thing I think will be great is if they have Steam Workshop support for at least custom missions and whatnot. They already confirmed that there will be a full map and mission editor with this new game, so Id be willing to bet that they intend on including workshop support too. Hopefully.

I am playing the original Pharaoh - Cleopatra still and many of the missions are buggy on Windows 10 in a way they were not originally. For instance some monument constructions get stuck - building just ceases for no reason - and sometime exporting fails. In short the new version is going to need serious play testing on Windows 10 (and I suppose Windows 11)

It's a nice facelifting. I always liked the setting in ancients Rome or Egypt. I really liked the old game and played all the standard missions. However, without a virtual machine the performance of the Sierra Citybuilders and crashes are from not so good to very bad.. Especially bad if you play Zeus: the gods doesn't spawn in time because their spawn animation is really slow and you are probably gonna lose the mission.
Remaking the game without many twists is not a bad thing.
