I like the speed and feel of the bow. At first i thought aiming was a bit loose. But after playing awhile it felt better. If there is target lock, i totally missed it. But, havent struggled any without.
Dodging and general movement around the field works well.
Technique, Artefact, etc. unlocking as you play feels fine. Occasionally needing to grind a level an extra 1 or 2 times for gold doesn't feel bad.
Graphics are average. Looks good enough at 4K and ultra settings.
Performance has been solid. Haven't had any stuttering (PC specs and mileage may vary).
I think my only concern, again having not completed the game, is length and map variety. How much more game do i have? Visually, there are only 2 other map points I havent done, which could be up to 6 more stages? Not sure.
- fantastic idea of having a steampunk version of Sherwood
- all characters are re-imagined to have special weapons and abilities that make sense in this universe
-game runs flawlessly (game isn't a looker or anything tho)
That's about it sadly...
Cons
- enemy design (in combat, not the art design) is boring as hell, or formulaic if you like. You have normal dudes that just sit there 90% of the time, guy with aoe attack, guy with shield, guy with bow etc. And they all look almost identical too.
- sound design and ESPECIALLY voice acting is poor. The voice acting is REALLY bad, which is insane to me, coz all you had to do is find people that can talk with an English accent and you'd be golden, but except for Robin all of them are sub-par, especially Marian
- combat has some nice ideas, like making little John a melee brawler with an augmented steampunk-arm...but it feels floaty, with no impact and bear in mind I was playing the melee character
-enemy AI is just basic at best and bugged at worst. They don't do anything except sit there and attack every x seconds and if you put a wall between you and them they get stuck etc
-level design is boring as hell. Compared to something like vermintide that has crazy vast levels that still manage to funnel you in a corridor, this is just a narrow as all hell corridor then a small circular arena with enemies, rinse and repeat. And they even managed to make a grappling hook boring, since you can only use it in the "end of an area" places to change zones and in like 1 combat move when the enemy is airborne
Hopefully they have means to keep developing the game and make it better over time, because right now it's a pass...
The game has some potential in certain areas -- themes, general gameplay ideas, co-op, looks -- but, feels distinctly shallow and mostly like a cash grab for the holiday season; with the very remote possibility that, if it sells uber well (not likely), it could be revisited and refined in a sequel.
Verdict: 4.5/10 -- worth it for $5 in the post-Xmas bargain bin and/or as a rental.
There is no 2-hour limit until the general release of the game, you can still refund.
